Tekturna contains the active ingredient aliskiren. It is a prescription medication used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults.

High Blood Pressure

Tekturna is used to help lower blood pressure in adults with hypertension.

High blood pressure means the force of blood against the walls of the arteries stays higher than normal over time. If it is not controlled, it can increase the risk of serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and kidney damage.

Tekturna may be used alone or together with other blood pressure medications, depending on your treatment plan.

How Tekturna Works

Tekturna belongs to a class of medications called direct renin inhibitors.

Renin is an enzyme involved in the body’s renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which helps regulate blood pressure and fluid balance.

Tekturna works by directly blocking the activity of renin.

How Blocking Renin Lowers Blood Pressure

Blocking renin reduces the production of substances that normally cause blood vessels to tighten and encourage the body to retain sodium and water.

As a result, blood vessels can relax and blood pressure can decrease.

What Tekturna Does Not Do

Tekturna helps control high blood pressure, but it does not cure hypertension.

You may not feel any different while taking it because high blood pressure often does not cause noticeable symptoms.

Continue taking Tekturna as prescribed even if you feel well.

Long-Term Blood Pressure Control

Keeping blood pressure within a healthy range can help reduce strain on the heart and blood vessels over time.

Your healthcare provider may monitor your blood pressure, kidney function, and potassium levels while you are taking Tekturna to make sure the medication remains safe and effective.

Tekturna is taken by mouth once daily.

Take it at about the same time each day and follow a consistent routine with meals. In other words, if you usually take Tekturna with food, continue taking it that way each day. If you usually take it without food, keep that routine consistent.

Starting Dose

Starting dose: 150 mg once daily.

This is the usual starting dose for adults being treated for high blood pressure.

Maximum Dose

If your blood pressure is not adequately controlled, your healthcare provider may increase the dose to:

Maximum dose: 300 mg once daily.

Do not increase your dose or take Tekturna more often than prescribed.

Taking Tekturna With Food

High-fat meals can significantly reduce the amount of aliskiren your body absorbs.

For this reason, try to take Tekturna in the same way each day in relation to meals and avoid routinely taking it with a high-fat meal.

Fruit Juices

Certain fruit juices, including apple, orange, and grapefruit juice, may reduce the absorption of aliskiren.

It is best to take Tekturna with water rather than fruit juice.

Take Tekturna Regularly

Take Tekturna every day as prescribed, even if you feel well.

High blood pressure often does not cause noticeable symptoms, so you may not feel a difference even when the medication is working.

Taking Tekturna consistently helps maintain its blood-pressure-lowering effect.

Dose Adjustments

Your healthcare provider will choose your dose based on:

  • Your blood pressure
  • Your response to treatment
  • Kidney function
  • Other medications you take
  • Any side effects you experience

Do not change your dose without speaking with your healthcare provider.

What to Do If You Miss a Dose

If you miss a dose of Tekturna, take it when you remember unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose.

If your next dose is approaching, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.

Follow Your Healthcare Provider’s Instructions

Continue checking your blood pressure as recommended and attend any scheduled follow-up appointments.

Your healthcare provider may also monitor your kidney function and potassium levels while you are taking Tekturna.

Tekturna: Tablet

  • 300 mg

Pregnancy

Tekturna can cause serious harm to a developing fetus.

If you become pregnant while taking Tekturna, contact your healthcare provider right away. The medication should generally be stopped as soon as pregnancy is detected.

Drugs that affect the renin-angiotensin system can cause serious fetal kidney problems and other complications, particularly later in pregnancy.

Use With ACE Inhibitors or ARBs

Tekturna should not be used together with an ACE inhibitor or an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) in people with diabetes.

Combining these medications can increase the risk of:

  • Kidney impairment
  • High potassium levels
  • Low blood pressure

Combined use should also generally be avoided in people with reduced kidney function.

Low Blood Pressure

Tekturna can sometimes cause blood pressure to drop too low.

The risk may be greater if you are dehydrated, have low sodium levels, take diuretics, or already have kidney problems.

Symptoms of low blood pressure may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Weakness
  • Fainting

Contact your healthcare provider if these symptoms are severe or persistent.

Kidney Problems

Tekturna can affect kidney function, particularly in people who already have kidney disease or who are taking other medications that affect the kidneys.

Your healthcare provider may check your kidney function before and during treatment.

Tell your healthcare provider if you notice a major decrease in urination, swelling, unusual weakness, or other symptoms that may suggest a kidney problem.

High Potassium Levels

Tekturna can increase the amount of potassium in your blood, a condition called hyperkalemia.

The risk may be higher if you:

  • Have kidney disease
  • Take potassium supplements
  • Use potassium-containing salt substitutes
  • Take potassium-sparing diuretics
  • Take other medications that raise potassium levels

Your healthcare provider may monitor your potassium with blood tests.

Do not start potassium supplements or potassium-containing salt substitutes without checking with your healthcare provider first.

Liver Problems

Tell your healthcare provider if you have liver disease.

A routine starting-dose adjustment is not generally required solely because of hepatic impairment, but your healthcare provider will consider your overall health and other medications when deciding whether Tekturna is appropriate.

Use in Older Adults

Older adults may be more sensitive to changes in blood pressure, kidney function, or potassium levels.

Your healthcare provider may monitor these more closely during treatment.

Stand up slowly from a sitting or lying position if Tekturna makes you feel dizzy or lightheaded.

Angioedema and Serious Allergic Reactions

Rarely, Tekturna can cause angioedema, a serious allergic reaction involving swelling beneath the skin.

Seek emergency medical attention if you develop:

  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Severe hives or another serious allergic reaction

Angioedema can occur at any time during treatment.

NSAIDs and Other Kidney-Affecting Medications

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen may reduce the blood-pressure-lowering effect of Tekturna and may increase the risk of kidney problems in some people.

The risk may be greater in older adults, people who are dehydrated, or those with existing kidney impairment.

Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist before using NSAIDs regularly while taking Tekturna.

Regular Monitoring

Your healthcare provider may monitor:

  • Blood pressure
  • Kidney function
  • Potassium levels
  • Signs of dehydration or low blood pressure

Regular monitoring helps determine whether Tekturna remains safe and effective for you.

Is Tekturna safe to take during pregnancy?

No. Tekturna should not be used during pregnancy because it can cause serious harm to a developing baby. If you become pregnant while taking Tekturna, stop the medication and contact your healthcare provider as soon as possible. Drugs such as aliskiren that affect the renin-angiotensin system can cause serious fetal kidney problems and other complications.

Can Tekturna be taken with other blood pressure medications?

Yes, Tekturna may sometimes be used with other blood pressure medications, but the combination should be selected and monitored by your healthcare provider. Tekturna should not be combined with an ACE inhibitor or ARB in people with diabetes because this can increase the risk of kidney problems, high potassium levels, and low blood pressure. These combinations should also generally be avoided in people with reduced kidney function.

Can calcium supplements interact with Tekturna?

Calcium supplements are not listed as a specific major interaction with Tekturna. However, it is still important to tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist about all supplements you take. Some supplements or salt substitutes may contain potassium, which is important because Tekturna can increase potassium levels in the blood. Check with your healthcare provider before starting a new vitamin, mineral, or herbal supplement.

Can Tekturna be used to treat conditions other than high blood pressure?

Tekturna is approved to treat high blood pressure, or hypertension. In the United States, aliskiren is approved for adults and certain children who are at least 6 years old and weigh 50 kg or more. It is not routinely prescribed for other conditions unless a healthcare provider determines that an off-label use is appropriate.
