Lamictal XR (lamotrigine XR) is available in tablet form and should be taken with or without food, usually once daily or as instructed by a healthcare provider. Swallow the tablets whole, and not crush or chew them, as doing so can release all the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.
The recommended dosage of Lamotrigine XR (extended release) depends on the individual’s condition and medications they are taking. However, here are a few general dosing guidelines:
- For patients not taking enzyme-inducing antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), the recommended initial dose is 25mg once daily for 2 weeks, then 50mg once daily for 2 weeks, then a maintenance dose of 200mg once daily.
- For patients taking enzyme-inducing AEDs but not valproic acid, the recommended initial dose is 50mg once daily for 2 weeks, then 100mg/day divided q12hr for 2 weeks, then a maintenance dose of 300mg/day given once daily.
- For patients taking valproic acid, the recommended initial dose is 25mg once every other day for 2 weeks, then 25mg once daily for 2 weeks, then a maintenance dose of 200-400mg/day depending on the individual’s specific situation.
Dosage is based on medical condition, response to treatment, and use of certain interacting drugs. If switching from the immediate release form of this medication, the doctor will usually start with a similar dose to what was taken with the immediate release form.
Follow the doctor’s dosing instructions exactly, as the dose must be increased slowly. It may take several weeks or months to reach the best dose and get the full benefits of the medication. To help remember taking it, use it at the same time each day.
Do not stop taking Lamictal XR tablets without consulting a healthcare provider. Some conditions may worsen when the drug is suddenly stopped. The dose may need to be gradually decreased. If someone has stopped taking this medication, do not restart lamotrigine without consulting a healthcare provider.
