Indications

Voltaren SR (sustained release) is a prescription-strength oral medication used to treat pain and inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. The medication comes in tablets containing 75 or 100 mg of diclofenac sodium and is not suitable for children.

Voltaren SR is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by reducing the levels of prostaglandins, which are hormones that cause pain and inflammation in the body. Voltaren SR is a slow-release medication that is designed to provide long-lasting pain relief.

Use and Dosage

Voltaren SR comes in the form of Tablet SA while its generic version Diclofenac SR comes as capsules to take them orally. The tablets should be swallowed whole with water and should not be crushed or chewed. The tablets may be taken with or without food. The Capsules should be swallowed whole with water and should not be crushed or chewed. You may take the capsules with or without food, but Diclofenac capsules should be taken on an empty stomach.

Do not lie down for at least 10 minutes after taking this medication. If stomach upset occurs while taking the medication, you may take it with food, milk, or an antacid. However, this may slow absorption and delay pain relief.

The recommended daily dose of Voltaren SR (Diclofenac SR) tablets ranges from 75mg to 200mg per day, taken in divided doses. The recommended initial daily dose is 100 to 150 mg, in 1 or 2 divided doses. In milder cases, as well as for long-term therapy, 75 to 100 mg daily is usually recommended. However, the maximum recommended daily dose is 100mg. Note that you should always follow the dosage instructions provided by your doctor or pharmacist and not exceed the recommended dose on your own.

To minimize the possibility of experiencing side effects like stomach bleeding, consume the medicine in the minimum effective quantity and for a limited period of time. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or consume it more frequently or for longer durations than what has been prescribed. Consult your pharmacist or doctor to understand the potential benefits and risks of this medication.

Cautions

  • Voltaren SR should not be given to children and adolescents due to its dosage strength.
  • Diclofenac, the active ingredient in Voltaren SR, has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular events (such as heart attack and stroke), especially at higher doses and with long-term use. It is important to use this medication only as directed and to discuss the risks and benefits with a healthcare provider before taking it.
  • Like other NSAIDs, diclofenac may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and ulcers, especially in older adults. Individuals with a history of stomach or intestinal problems should use this medication with caution and may require monitoring by a healthcare provider.
  • Individuals with a history of asthma or allergic reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs should not take Voltaren SR or any other diclofenac-containing medication. Allergic reactions to diclofenac can be serious and even life-threatening.
  • Diclofenac may interact with other medications or medical conditions, so it is important to tell a healthcare provider about all medications being taken, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, as well as any medical conditions or allergies.
  • Voltaren SR should not be used by women who are in the last trimester of pregnancy. It may also have adverse effects on fertility in women and should be avoided by women who are trying to conceive.
  • It is important to take Voltaren SR exactly as prescribed and not to exceed the recommended dose or duration of treatment. Use of this medication for prolonged periods of time can increase the risk of side effects.
  • Diclofenac may cause serious skin reactions, including an allergic skin reaction known as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Seek medical attention immediately if any signs of a skin reaction occur.
  • Individuals with kidney or liver disease should use Voltaren SR with caution and may require monitoring by a healthcare provider.
  • Diclofenac may interact with certain medications, including blood thinners, diuretics, and certain antidepressants. Inform a healthcare provider about all medications being taken before using Voltaren SR.
  • Use of Voltaren SR may cause dizziness or drowsiness and impair mental and/or physical abilities. Individuals should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until the effects of the medication are known.
