Zyloprim is given to patients with high uric acid levels in order to prevent gout, kidney stones, and kidney damage. Zyloprim may also be given to patients with cancer or blood disorders that lead to an excess of uric acid in the body. Uric acid is produced when certain proteins are broken down in the body; if there is more uric acid present than the body can eliminate, the acid forms crystals in the joints and tissues leading to inflammation and pain.
