Indinavir is typically prescribed as a capsule to take by mouth every 8 hours, or three times a day. Do not crush or chew the capsule, but it may be opened and mixed with fruit puree (such as banana). Take indinavir at around the same time every day and follow the prescription label directions carefully. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns.
Indinavir should be taken on an empty stomach, typically 1 hour before meals or 2 hours after meals, with water, skim or non-fat milk, juice, coffee, or tea. If indinavir upsets your stomach, you may take it with a light meal such as dry toast or cornflakes with skim or non-fat milk. Tell your doctor or pharmacist to determine which foods may be taken with indinavir.
Continue taking indinavir even if you feel well, and not stop taking it without consulting your doctor. If you experience certain side effects, your doctor may need to interrupt your treatment, so be sure to keep your doctor informed about how you are feeling during your treatment with indinavir.
