Indications

Videx EC (generically known as Didanosine) is a prescription medication used to treat human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infections. It is sometimes used to treat hepatitis B virus infections as well. Pancreatitis and lactic acidosis are serious risks associated with the medication.

Didanosine belongs to the class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and is used in combination with other HIV medications to help control HIV infection. It works by decreasing the amount of HIV in the body, allowing the immune system to function better.

Use and Dosage

Videx comes in the form of EC capsules to take it by mouth usually taken once daily on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal. Swallow the capsules whole. Do not crush, chew, or open the capsules. Doing so may decrease their effectiveness. If a patient has difficulty swallowing the capsule whole, they should inform their healthcare provider, who may consider alternative treatment options or administering the medication in a different form, such as pediatric powder, for patients who cannot swallow capsules.

The recommended dosage of Videx EC (didanosine) depends on the patient's age, weight, and kidney function. The recommended total daily dose for adult and pediatric patients is typically between 200-400mg, taken once daily on an empty stomach. For pediatric patients, the weight cutoffs may vary based on the formulation of the medication. Therefore, patients with kidney insufficiency adjust the dosage of Videx, as recommended by their healthcare provider. Overall, patients should follow the dosing instructions provided by their healthcare provider and should not adjust their dosage without first consulting their provider.

Take the capsules exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
