Atrovent Nasal Spray contains the active ingredient ipratropium bromide. It is a prescription medication used to reduce excessive nasal drainage caused by certain types of rhinitis.

The medication mainly treats a runny nose. It does not usually provide significant relief from nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, or postnasal drip caused by mucus coming from the sinuses.

Allergic Rhinitis

Atrovent Nasal Spray may be used to relieve rhinorrhea, or a runny nose, associated with allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis occurs when the immune system reacts to substances that are normally harmless. Common triggers include:

  • Pollen
  • Dust mites
  • Pet dander
  • Mould
  • Other airborne allergens

When the nose is exposed to an allergen, the nasal glands may produce too much fluid. This can cause frequent dripping, repeated nose blowing, and watery nasal discharge.

Atrovent helps reduce this excess fluid production. However, it does not treat the allergic reaction itself and may not significantly improve other symptoms such as sneezing, nasal itching, or congestion.

The 0.03% nasal spray is approved for a runny nose associated with allergic and nonallergic perennial rhinitis in adults and children 6 years of age and older.

Nonallergic Rhinitis

Atrovent Nasal Spray may also be used to treat a runny nose caused by nonallergic rhinitis, sometimes called vasomotor rhinitis.

Nonallergic rhinitis does not involve an allergic immune response. Instead, the nasal passages react strongly to environmental changes or irritants.

Common triggers may include:

  • Smoke
  • Perfume or strong odors
  • Cleaning products
  • Cold or dry air
  • Changes in temperature
  • Spicy foods
  • Air pollution
  • Exercise

These triggers can stimulate the glands inside the nose and cause watery nasal drainage. Atrovent reduces the amount of fluid produced by these glands.

It does not remove the underlying trigger or cure nonallergic rhinitis. Symptoms may return when the medication is stopped or when the person is exposed to the trigger again.

Seasonal Allergies and the Common Cold

Different strengths of Atrovent Nasal Spray have different approved uses.

The 0.06% nasal spray may be used for short-term relief of a runny nose caused by seasonal allergic rhinitis or the common cold in adults and children 5 years of age and older.

Patients should use the exact strength prescribed by their healthcare provider because the dose, treatment duration, and approved age range may differ between products.

How Atrovent Nasal Spray Works

Atrovent belongs to a group of medicines called anticholinergics.

The nerves inside the nose release a natural chemical called acetylcholine. Acetylcholine attaches to muscarinic receptors on the nasal glands and signals them to produce fluid.

Ipratropium blocks acetylcholine from attaching to these receptors. This decreases the activity of the nasal glands and reduces the amount of watery mucus produced.

As a result, Atrovent may help:

  • Reduce dripping from the nose
  • Decrease the need to blow the nose
  • Control excessive watery nasal discharge
  • Make daily activities more comfortable

The medication works mainly inside the nasal passages. Only a small amount is generally absorbed into the rest of the body.

What Atrovent Nasal Spray Does Not Treat

Atrovent Nasal Spray is designed mainly to control a runny nose. It does not usually provide meaningful relief from:

  • Nasal congestion or blockage
  • Sneezing
  • Nasal itching
  • Eye itching or watering
  • Sinus pain or pressure
  • The underlying cause of allergies

A healthcare provider may prescribe another medication, such as an antihistamine or corticosteroid nasal spray, when these symptoms also require treatment.

What to Expect During Treatment

Atrovent may begin reducing nasal drainage after a dose, but the response can vary between individuals. It should be used according to the prescribed schedule for the best symptom control.

The medication helps manage symptoms but does not cure allergic or nonallergic rhinitis. Contact your healthcare provider if the runny nose does not improve, becomes worse, or is accompanied by fever, facial pain, thick discolored mucus, or frequent nosebleeds.

Use Atrovent nasal spray exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. The correct dose depends on the strength of the nasal spray, your age, and the cause of your runny nose.

Atrovent Nasal Spray is available in 0.03% and 0.06% strengths. These products have different approved uses, dosing schedules, and treatment durations. Check the label carefully to make sure you are using the correct strength.

Do not use more sprays, use the medication more often, or continue treatment longer than prescribed. Using extra medication may increase nasal dryness, irritation, nosebleeds, or other side effects without providing additional relief.

Before Using the Nasal Spray

Gently blow your nose before each dose to clear mucus from the nasal passages.

Wash your hands and remove the protective cap. Check the spray tip to make sure it is clean and not blocked.

Keep the bottle upright. Avoid spraying the medication into your eyes because it may cause eye pain, blurred vision, or other vision problems.

How to Use the Nasal Spray

Follow these steps when taking a dose:

  1. Gently blow your nose.
  2. Close one nostril by pressing it with your finger.
  3. Place the spray tip just inside the other nostril.
  4. Point the tip slightly away from the center wall of your nose.
  5. Breathe in gently through your nose while pressing the pump.
  6. Breathe out through your mouth.
  7. Repeat the process if another spray is prescribed.
  8. Use the medication in the other nostril as directed.
  9. Wipe the spray tip and replace the protective cap.

Do not sniff deeply after spraying. A strong sniff may cause the medication to run down your throat instead of remaining inside your nose.

Atrovent Nasal Spray 0.03%

The 0.03% strength is used to relieve a runny nose associated with year-round allergic or nonallergic rhinitis.

The recommended dose for adults and children 6 years of age and older is two sprays in each nostril two or three times daily. The healthcare provider may adjust the schedule based on how well the medication controls symptoms.

Use the medication regularly according to the prescribed schedule. It mainly reduces watery nasal drainage and may not relieve congestion, sneezing, or nasal itching.

Atrovent Nasal Spray 0.06% for the Common Cold

The 0.06% strength may be used for short-term relief of a runny nose caused by the common cold.

For adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older, the usual dose is two sprays in each nostril three or four times daily.

Children 5 to 11 years of age are generally given two sprays in each nostril three times daily.

Treatment for a common cold should not continue for longer than four days unless a healthcare provider gives different instructions. The safety and effectiveness of using the 0.06% spray for a cold beyond four days have not been established.

Atrovent Nasal Spray 0.06% for Seasonal Allergies

For a runny nose caused by seasonal allergic rhinitis, the usual dose is two sprays in each nostril four times daily.

This schedule applies to adults and children 5 years of age and older. Treatment should generally not continue for longer than three weeks unless directed by a healthcare provider.

Priming the Pump

Prime a new bottle before using it for the first time. Priming fills the pump and helps ensure that each spray contains the correct dose.

Follow the instructions supplied with your specific product. You may also need to prime the pump again if it has not been used for a certain number of days.

When priming the bottle, point it away from your face and eyes. Pump it until a fine, even mist appears.

Cleaning the Spray Tip

Wipe the spray tip after each use and replace the protective cap.

If the tip becomes blocked, remove and clean it according to the product instructions. Do not use a pin or another sharp object to clear the opening because this may damage the spray mechanism and affect the dose.

Using the Medication Regularly

Use the nasal spray at approximately the same times each day. A regular schedule can help maintain control of excessive nasal drainage and reduce missed doses.

Ipratropium treats a runny nose only while it is being used. It does not cure allergic rhinitis, nonallergic rhinitis, or the common cold.

Contact your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve, become worse, or continue after the recommended treatment period.

  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Constipation
  • Difficulty urinating
  • A rapid heartbeat

Do not start, stop, or change another medication without first speaking with your healthcare provider or pharmacist.

Is Atrovent a steroid?

No. Atrovent contains ipratropium, which is an anticholinergic medication. It is not a corticosteroid. Atrovent works by reducing the amount of fluid produced by the glands inside the nose. Steroid nasal sprays work differently by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages.

Is Atrovent Nasal Spray safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

Talk to your healthcare provider before using Atrovent Nasal Spray if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Your healthcare provider will consider your symptoms, treatment needs, and any possible risks before recommending the medication.

Can Atrovent Nasal Spray be used every day?

Atrovent Nasal Spray may be used daily when prescribed for ongoing allergic or nonallergic rhinitis. It is mainly used to control a watery, runny nose. It does not usually provide significant relief from nasal congestion, sneezing, or itching. Use the medication only for the prescribed condition, dose, and length of time.

How long can Atrovent Nasal Spray be used?

The recommended treatment period depends on the strength of the spray and the cause of the runny nose. For a runny nose caused by the common cold, the 0.06% spray is generally used for no longer than four days. For seasonal allergies, the 0.06% spray is generally used for no longer than three weeks. The 0.03% spray may be used for longer-term allergic or nonallergic rhinitis when prescribed by a healthcare provider. Contact your healthcare provider if symptoms do not improve, become worse, or continue beyond the recommended treatment period.
