Cautions
- Risk of developing tardive dyskinesia (a movement disorder that may become permanent) especially in elderly patients or patients taking high doses for a long time.
- Risperidone can increase the risk for stroke and transient ischemic attack (TIA) in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis.
- Elevated prolactin levels which may cause breast enlargement, milk production, decreased libido, and erectile dysfunction.
- Increased risk of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), a rare but potentially fatal condition characterized by muscle rigidity, fever, and mental status changes.
- Risperidone may cause orthostatic hypotension, a sudden drop in blood pressure upon standing which could lead to dizziness or fainting.
- Risperdal may impair your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery.
- Risperdal may interact with other medications or substances, including alcohol, causing adverse effects.
- Excretion may be slow in patients with impaired liver or kidney function.
