Xerese cream is a prescription medication used to treat cold sores (herpes labialis) on and around the mouth. Here are some tips for using Xerese:
- Use Xerese cream at the first sign of a cold sore outbreak.
- Before applying the cream, wash your hands with soap and water to prevent the spread of infection.
- Clean and dry the affected area before applying the cream.
- Apply a thin layer of Xerese cream over the affected area as directed by your healthcare provider. This is usually done 5 times a day (every 3 to 4 hours) for 5 days.
- Make sure to apply enough cream to cover all affected areas, but avoid rubbing the cream into your skin, as this can make the cold sore worse or spread the virus to other areas around your mouth.
- Do not apply other skin products like make-up, sunscreen, or lip balm to the affected area, and do not cover the area with a bandage.
- To prevent washing off the medication, wait at least 30 minutes after applying the Xerese cream before bathing, showering, or swimming.
Xerese cream should not be applied in the eyes, nose, mouth, or genitals. It is also not a cure for herpes and will not prevent the spread of the virus to other people. Therefore, you should avoid kissing or sharing eating utensils, cups, razors, or towels during an outbreak. If you do touch the cold sore, make sure to wash your hands afterward.
Use Xerese cream regularly as directed by your healthcare provider to get the most benefit from it. If your condition lasts or worsens after 2 weeks, be sure to inform your healthcare provider.
