Muscle Pain and Weakness
Trilipix can rarely cause serious muscle problems, including myopathy and rhabdomyolysis.
The risk may be higher if you:
- Take Trilipix with a statin
- Are an older adult
- Have kidney problems
- Have hypothyroidism
Contact your healthcare provider right away if you develop unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you also have fever, unusual tiredness, or dark-colored urine.
Liver Problems
Trilipix can cause liver injury.
Your healthcare provider may check your liver function before treatment and periodically while you are taking the medication.
Contact your healthcare provider if you develop symptoms such as:
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
- Dark urine
- Severe tiredness
- Persistent nausea
- Upper abdominal pain
Trilipix should not be used in people with active liver disease or unexplained persistent liver test abnormalities.
Kidney Problems
Trilipix can increase blood creatinine levels and may affect kidney function.
People with mild to moderate kidney impairment may need a lower dose.
Trilipix should not be used in people with severe kidney impairment, end-stage kidney disease, or those receiving dialysis.
Your healthcare provider may monitor your kidney function during treatment.
Gallstones
Trilipix can increase the amount of cholesterol released into bile, which may increase the risk of gallstones.
Contact your healthcare provider if you develop symptoms such as:
- Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Pain after eating
Trilipix should not be used if you already have gallbladder disease.
Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, has been reported in people taking fibrate medications such as Trilipix.
Seek medical attention if you develop severe or persistent abdominal pain, especially if it spreads to your back or is accompanied by nausea or vomiting.
Warfarin and Bleeding Risk
Trilipix can increase the effect of warfarin and other coumarin-type blood thinners.
This may increase the risk of bleeding.
If you take one of these medications, your healthcare provider may check your INR more often and adjust your blood thinner dose if needed.
Allergic Reactions
Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema, have been reported with fibrate medications.
Seek immediate medical attention if you develop:
- Hives
- Severe rash
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Trilipix should not be used if you are allergic to fenofibric acid, fenofibrate, or any ingredient in the medication.
Severe Skin Reactions
Rare but serious skin reactions have also been reported with fibrates.
These may include Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, and DRESS.
Stop taking Trilipix and seek medical attention if you develop a severe rash, blistering, peeling skin, fever, or swelling.
Blood Cell Changes
Trilipix can sometimes lower red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets.
Your healthcare provider may check your blood cell counts during the first year of treatment.
Contact your healthcare provider if you develop unusual bruising, bleeding, persistent fever, or signs of infection.
Drug Interactions
Trilipix can interact with other medications, including:
- Statins
- Warfarin and other anticoagulants
- Bile acid-binding medications
- Cyclosporine
- Other medicines that may affect the kidneys
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription medications, over-the-counter products, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you use.
Regular Monitoring
While taking Trilipix, your healthcare provider may monitor your:
- Cholesterol and triglyceride levels
- Liver function
- Kidney function
- Blood cell counts
- Muscle symptoms
Regular monitoring helps make sure Trilipix remains safe and effective for you.
