Low Blood Pressure and Dizziness
Jalyn may cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, especially when standing up from a sitting or lying position. This can lead to dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, or fainting.
The risk may be greater in people who already have low blood pressure or who take medications for high blood pressure. Stand up slowly and use caution when driving, operating machinery, or doing activities where dizziness or fainting could cause injury.
Caution may also be needed when Jalyn is taken with cimetidine-containing products because they may affect how tamsulosin is processed by the body.
Priapism
In rare cases, Jalyn may cause priapism, a painful erection that lasts for several hours and does not go away.
Priapism is a medical emergency because prolonged erections can cause permanent damage if not treated promptly. Seek immediate medical attention if an erection lasts longer than 4 hours.
Pregnancy and Exposure to Dutasteride
Dutasteride, one of the active ingredients in Jalyn, can cause abnormalities in the development of a male fetus.
Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid handling leaking or damaged Jalyn capsules. If accidental contact occurs, the affected area should be washed thoroughly with soap and water.
Prostate Cancer Screening
Regular prostate evaluations remain important while taking Jalyn.
Dutasteride can lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, which are commonly measured during prostate cancer screening. Because treatment can affect PSA test results, your healthcare provider will take Jalyn use into account when interpreting these results.
Continue to attend any prostate examinations or screening tests recommended by your doctor.
Risk of High-Grade Prostate Cancer
Treatment with dutasteride has been associated with an increased incidence of certain high-grade prostate cancers in clinical studies.
Your doctor will consider your individual risk factors and may monitor your prostate health during treatment. Discuss any concerns about prostate cancer or screening with your healthcare provider.
Cataract Surgery and Floppy Iris Syndrome
Tamsulosin, one of the ingredients in Jalyn, has been associated with a condition called intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during cataract or glaucoma surgery.
Tell your ophthalmologist or eye surgeon if you currently take Jalyn or have taken it in the past. This information can help the surgical team prepare for and manage possible complications during the procedure.
Liver Problems
Jalyn should be used carefully in people with liver problems because both active ingredients are processed by the liver.
Tell your doctor if you have a history of liver disease or reduced liver function. Your healthcare provider can determine whether Jalyn is appropriate and whether additional monitoring is needed.
Changes in Ejaculation
Jalyn may cause changes in ejaculation, including a reduction in the amount of semen released during sexual activity.
These changes are generally related to the effects of tamsulosin and dutasteride. Tell your doctor if sexual side effects become bothersome or if you have concerns about fertility.
Allergic Reactions
Although uncommon, allergic reactions can occur while taking Jalyn.
Symptoms may include rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, or difficulty breathing. Seek medical attention immediately if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Drug Interactions
Jalyn may interact with other prescription medications, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements.
Some medications can increase the amount of tamsulosin or dutasteride in the body, while others may increase the risk of low blood pressure or other side effects.
Before starting Jalyn, tell your doctor or pharmacist about everything you are taking. Do not start, stop, or change another medication without discussing it with your healthcare provider.
Other Urinary Conditions
Not all urinary symptoms are caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. Urinary tract infections, prostate cancer, bladder conditions, and other medical problems can sometimes cause similar symptoms.
Jalyn does not treat these other conditions and may not relieve symptoms caused by them. Tell your doctor if you develop painful urination, blood in the urine, fever, worsening urinary symptoms, or difficulty emptying your bladder.
