Before taking Bystolic, tell your healthcare provider about your complete medical history, including any medical conditions, allergies, and medications you are taking.
Dizziness and Drowsiness
Bystolic may cause dizziness, drowsiness, or lightheadedness, especially when starting treatment or after a dose increase.
Alcohol and cannabis (marijuana) can worsen these effects. Until you know how Bystolic affects you, avoid:
- Driving
- Operating machinery
- Performing activities that require alertness or concentration
Talk to your healthcare provider if you use cannabis or have questions about alcohol consumption while taking Bystolic.
Medical Conditions
Tell your healthcare provider if you have or have ever had:
- Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
- Heart rhythm problems
- Second- or third-degree atrioventricular (AV) block
- Heart failure
- Raynaud’s disease or peripheral vascular disease
- Asthma, chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or other breathing problems
- Kidney disease
- Liver disease
- Depression or other mood disorders
- Myasthenia gravis
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid)
- Severe allergic reactions requiring epinephrine treatment
These conditions may affect whether Bystolic is appropriate for you or may require closer monitoring during treatment.
Allergic Reactions
Do not take Bystolic if you are allergic to nebivolol or any of the ingredients in the medication.
Seek immediate medical attention if you develop signs of a serious allergic reaction, including:
- Rash or hives
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Difficulty breathing
Some inactive ingredients in the medication may also cause allergic reactions in certain individuals.
Low Blood Sugar in Children
Children may be more sensitive to low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), especially if they are vomiting, eating poorly, or unable to maintain a regular eating schedule.
Seek medical attention immediately if a child taking Bystolic develops symptoms of low blood sugar, such as:
- Sweating
- Shakiness
- Confusion
- Seizures
Pregnancy
Bystolic should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider.
Babies exposed to beta-blockers during pregnancy may require monitoring after birth for potential complications, including:
- Low blood pressure
- Slow heart rate
- Low blood sugar
- Breathing difficulties
- Reduced birth weight
If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, discuss the potential benefits and risks of treatment with your healthcare provider.
Do Not Stop Treatment Suddenly
Do not stop taking Bystolic without consulting your healthcare provider. Suddenly stopping a beta-blocker may worsen certain heart conditions or cause a rapid increase in blood pressure.
Your healthcare provider can advise you on how to safely reduce or discontinue treatment if needed.
Regular monitoring of blood pressure, heart rate, and overall response to treatment can help ensure Bystolic remains safe and effective.
