Indications

Estring is used to manage menopausal changes in and around the vagina and can help to reduce vaginal and urinary symptoms of menopause. Estring is a vaginal ring with the generic name estradiol hemihydrate. Estring medication is classified as an estrogen derivative.

Estring is a soft, flexible ring that is used after menopause to continuously release an estrogen hormone over a period of 3 months. It is a local estrogen therapy that provides relief of moderate to severe menopausal changes in and around the vagina. Estring vaginal ring can also treat urinary symptoms like painful urination and frequent urges to urinate.

Uses and Dosage

Estring is inserted into the vagina using a gentle, pushing motion. It should be left in place for 90 days and then removed and replaced with a new ring. Use Estring exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Here are the general steps for how to use Estring:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water and dry them.
  2. Remove the Estring from its pouch.
  3. Hold the ring between your thumb and index finger.
  4. Position yourself in a comfortable position, such as lying down or standing with one leg raised.
  5. Insert the ring into your vagina using a gentle, pushing motion.
  6. You should leave the ring in place for 90 days. After that time, you should remove it and insert a new ring.

If the ring is put in properly, you should not be able to feel it and it will not interfere with sexual intercourse. If you can feel the ring or feel slight discomfort from the ring, it may mean that the ring is not high enough. Gently push the ring higher with your finger. If the ring falls out of the vagina, rinse the ring with lukewarm water and put it back into the vagina. Contact your doctor if the ring falls out often.
