Indications

Coly-Mycin M is an antibiotic medication used to treat infections caused by certain gram-negative bacteria. It contains the active ingredient colistimethate sodium. Colistimethate works by binding to bacterial cell walls and disrupting their function. This ultimately leads to cell death, effectively treating bacterial infections caused by specific bacteria.

Colistimethate is intended for parenteral use, meaning it is administered through injection or infusion into a vein or muscle. It is used to reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of antibacterial drugs. Note that Coly-Mycin M should only be used for bacterial infections that it has been specifically prescribed for.

Use and Dosage

Colistimethate injection is available as a powder that needs to be mixed with a liquid and injected into a vein over 3 to 5 minutes, or into the muscles of the bottom or thigh. The usual dosage is every 6 to 12 hours. Alternatively, a continuous intravenous infusion over 22 to 23 hours may also be given, depending on the type of infection and the patient’s health.

The duration of the treatment varies from person to person and depends on their general health and how well they respond to the medication. If you are administering the medication at home, make sure you understand the instructions your healthcare provider explains to you. You can expect to feel better within the first few days of treatment but keep taking the medication until the prescribed dosage is complete. Even if you feel better, stopping early or missing doses can lead to incomplete treatment and antibiotic resistance in bacteria.
