Alinia (active ingredient: nitazoxanide) is a prescription medication indicated for the following:

  1. Cryptosporidiosis: Alinia is used for the treatment of diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum or Cryptosporidium hominis in immunocompetent patients aged 12 years and older.
  2. Giardiasis: It is indicated for the treatment of diarrhea caused by Giardia lamblia in pediatric patients aged 1 year and older and in adults.

Alinia belongs to a class of drugs known as antiprotozoals. It works by interfering with the production of certain chemicals that protozoal parasites need to survive and reproduce, thereby helping to eliminate the parasites from the body.

Nitazoxanide tablets should be taken orally with food. It is usually taken with food every 12 hours for 3 days. Take nitazoxanide at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take nitazoxanide exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.

However, in general, for patients 12 years and older, the recommended dosage is 500mg orally every 12 hours with food for a duration of 3 days.
