Alinia contains the active ingredient nitazoxanide. It is a prescription medication used to treat certain intestinal infections caused by microscopic parasites.

These infections can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, dehydration, and weakness.

Cryptosporidiosis

Alinia is used to treat diarrhea caused by Cryptosporidium parvum or Cryptosporidium hominis.

These parasites infect the intestines and are usually spread through contaminated water, food, surfaces, or contact with an infected person or animal.

Alinia is used for cryptosporidiosis in people with a normally functioning immune system. The approved age may depend on the product formulation and local prescribing information.

Giardiasis

Alinia is also used to treat diarrhea caused by Giardia lamblia, also called Giardia duodenalis.

Giardiasis may cause:

  • Watery or greasy diarrhea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Bloating
  • Gas
  • Nausea
  • Tiredness
  • Weight loss
  • Dehydration

The infection may spread through contaminated water or food, poor hand hygiene, or close contact with an infected person.

Alinia may be prescribed for adults and children aged 1 year and older.

How Alinia Works

Alinia belongs to a class of medications called antiprotozoals.

It interferes with chemical processes that certain parasites need to produce energy and survive. This prevents the parasites from continuing to grow and helps the body clear the infection.

Role in Treatment

Alinia treats specific parasitic causes of diarrhea. It does not treat every type of diarrhea and will not work against viral infections.

A healthcare provider may use stool tests or other assessments to identify the cause of the infection before prescribing treatment.

It is also important to drink enough fluids during diarrhea to replace lost water and electrolytes. Seek medical care if you develop signs of dehydration, blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or worsening symptoms.

Take Alinia exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.

Nitazoxanide tablets are taken by mouth with food. Taking the medication with a meal helps your body absorb it properly.

Alinia is usually taken every 12 hours for three days. Try to take each dose at approximately the same times each day, such as once in the morning and once in the evening.

Swallow the tablet with water. Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully.

Do not take a larger or smaller dose, use it more often, or continue treatment longer than prescribed.

Dosage for Adults and Adolescents

For adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older, the usual dose is:

500 mg by mouth every 12 hours with food for three days.

Complete the full three-day treatment course, even if your diarrhea or other symptoms improve sooner.

Dosage for Children

Children younger than 12 years are generally given the oral suspension instead of the tablet.

The appropriate dose depends mainly on the child’s age. A healthcare provider will prescribe the correct amount and explain how to measure each dose.

Do not give a child an adult tablet or change the dose based on body weight unless specifically directed by a healthcare provider.

Missed Dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you remember.

However, skip the missed dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. Take the next dose at the regular time.

Do not take two doses at once or take extra medication to make up for a missed dose.

Completing Treatment

Continue taking Alinia for the full amount of time prescribed.

Stopping treatment early may allow the parasitic infection to remain or return. Contact your healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve after completing treatment or if they become worse.

Liver Problems

Tell your healthcare provider if you have liver disease, hepatitis, or abnormal liver test results before taking Alinia.

The liver helps process nitazoxanide. People with liver problems may need closer monitoring during treatment.

Contact your healthcare provider if you develop yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe nausea, unusual tiredness, or pain in the upper-right side of the abdomen.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

There is limited information about the use of Alinia during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Your healthcare provider will consider the possible benefits and risks before recommending treatment.

Do not start or stop Alinia without medical guidance.

Dehydration From Severe Diarrhoea

Severe or ongoing diarrhea can cause the body to lose too much water and important minerals called electrolytes.

Drink enough fluids during treatment unless your healthcare provider has told you to limit fluids. Oral rehydration solutions may help replace lost water and electrolytes.

Seek medical care if you develop:

  • Very little or no urination
  • A dry mouth
  • Severe thirst
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Unusual weakness
  • A rapid heartbeat
  • Confusion
  • Inability to keep fluids down

Children, older adults, and people with other health conditions may become dehydrated more quickly.

Medication Interactions

Alinia may interact with certain medications.

Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription medications, over-the-counter products, vitamins, and supplements you take. Do not start, stop, or change another medication without medical advice.

Allergic Reactions

Do not take Alinia if you are allergic to nitazoxanide or any ingredient in the product.

Stop taking the medication and seek immediate medical care if you develop:

  • Hives or a severe rash
  • Intense itching
  • Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Severe dizziness or fainting

How Should Alinia Be Stored?

Store Alinia at room temperature in a dry place, away from excessive heat and moisture. Keep the medication in its original container and tightly closed when not in use. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets. Do not use Alinia after the expiry date printed on the packaging.

Should Alinia Be Taken With Food?

Yes. Alinia should be taken with food. Food helps the body absorb nitazoxanide properly and may also reduce stomach-related side effects. Take each dose with a meal and follow the schedule prescribed by your healthcare provider.

Can Alinia Treat Other Infections?

Alinia is approved to treat diarrhea caused by certain Cryptosporidium and Giardia parasites. It does not treat every cause of diarrhea and should not be used for bacterial, viral, or other parasitic infections unless specifically prescribed by a healthcare provider. Medical tests may be needed to identify the cause of your symptoms.

How Long Does Alinia Take to Work?

Some people may begin to feel better within a few days of starting treatment. However, the timing depends on the type and severity of the infection, the patient’s overall health, and the response to treatment. Complete the full prescribed treatment course, even if your symptoms improve early. Contact your healthcare provider if your diarrhea does not improve after treatment, becomes worse, or is accompanied by blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, fever, or signs of dehydration.
