Apoquel (Oclacitinib) is an oral medication used to effectively manage itching associated with allergic dermatitis in dogs aged 12 months or older. Apoquel is used to control the itching and inflammation caused by allergic skin diseases such as allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. It works by targeting the Janus kinase (JAK) pathway, which is responsible for the itching and inflammation in allergic skin diseases.
Apoquel is a potent anti-allergic medication typically prescribed by veterinarians to provide relief from acute and chronic canine pruritus. It can be used to treat other skin conditions in dogs, such as seborrhea, contact dermatitis, and other forms of allergic dermatitis. It is used occasionally in cats to treat certain skin conditions, such as allergic dermatitis and eosinophilic granuloma complex.

The dose of Apoquel is 0.4-0.6 mg/kg every 12 hours for up to 14 days, then 0.4-0.6 mg/kg once daily thereafter. Stay within the recommended dose range, as going above the recommended dose could lead to immune suppression, and going below the range may not be effective in controlling the condition.

If you miss a dose, give it when you remember, but if it is close to the time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed and give it at the next scheduled time and return to the regular dosing schedule. Never give your pet two doses at once or give extra doses.
Some dogs have been treated with Apoquel for more than five years without any problem, and we do not expect there will be long-term problems.
While not usually life threatening, allergies in dogs do cause discomfort. Most symptoms are associated with dermatologic problems, but some can also lead to chronic respiratory issues in some dogs if untreated for long periods of time.
