Janumet

Janumet is an oral diabetes drug used, along with diet and exercise, for treating type 2 diabetes in certain patients. It works by increasing insulin release. It decreases the amount of sugar that the liver produces and the intestines absorb. It also helps make your body more sensitive to the insulin that you naturally produce.

  • Janumet is not to be used for treating type 1 diabetes.
  • Your blood and kidneys will need to be tested on a regular basis while using Janumet.
  • Diet, exercise, weight control, and possibly other medications also the part of treatment from the Janumet.
  • Janumet is usually taken twice daily with meals. Do not skip a meal, exercise too long, or drink alcohol.
  • Use caution while driving or operating any machinery as it may cause dizziness.
  • Janumet may cause stomach upset, indigestion, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea at the beginning of treatment.

Tell your doctor if you: have lactic acidosis; congestive heart failure; weakness; increasing sleepiness; slow heart rate; cold feeling; muscle pain; shortness of breath; stomach pain; are feeling light-headed; fainting; vomiting; diarrhea; poor health or nutrition; low blood calcium or vitamin B12 levels; anemia; dehydration; are having surgery or certain lab procedures; infection; fever; recent injury; or moderate to severe burns.

Not to be used if you

  • are allergic to Janumet;
  • have liver disease;
  • have a history of heart disease;
  • have kidney disease;
  • have diabetic ketoacidosis;
  • are pregnant, plan to become pregnant during treatment, or are breast-feeding.

Janumet should not be used in children younger than 18 years old or patients more than 80 years old who have not had a kidney function test.

Janumet Side Effects

Common: Diarrhea; gas; headache; indigestion; nausea; sore throat; stomach upset; stuffy or runny nose; vomiting; weakness.

Severe: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); chest pain or discomfort; dizziness or lightheadedness; fast or difficult breathing; feeling of being unusually cold; fever, chills, or persistent sore throat; general feeling of being unwell; muscle pain or weakness; slow or irregular heartbeat; unusual drowsiness; unusual or persistent stomach pain or discomfort; unusual tiredness or weakness.
