Ziagen is an oral medication used together with other antiviral medicines to treat patients who are infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Abacavir belongs to a group of HIV medicines called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It works by blocking reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that HIV needs to make more copies of itself in the body. By blocking reverse transcriptase, abacavir helps to reduce the amount of HIV in the body and slows down the progression of HIV disease.
Ziagen Solution is taken orally by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 1 or 2 times daily.
