Sudden Breathing Problems
Symbicort Turbuhaler should not be used as the only treatment for a sudden, severe asthma or COPD attack unless your healthcare provider has specifically prescribed it as part of a maintenance-and-reliever asthma plan.
If you have been prescribed a separate quick-relief inhaler, such as salbutamol or albuterol, keep it available for sudden breathing symptoms.
Seek urgent medical attention if your breathing becomes severely worse or your usual reliever is not working.
Asthma Control
Symbicort contains both an inhaled corticosteroid and a long-acting beta-2 agonist (LABA).
LABA medications used without an inhaled corticosteroid can increase the risk of serious asthma-related complications. Symbicort combines formoterol with budesonide, which helps control airway inflammation.
Use Symbicort exactly as prescribed and do not stop the corticosteroid component on your own.
Worsening Breathing After a Dose
Rarely, Symbicort can cause paradoxical bronchospasm, which means breathing suddenly becomes worse immediately after using the inhaler.
Symptoms may include:
- Sudden wheezing
- Chest tightness
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty breathing
If this happens, stop using the inhaler and seek medical attention promptly.
Pneumonia and Other Respiratory Infections
People with COPD who use inhaled corticosteroids may have an increased risk of pneumonia.
Contact your healthcare provider if you develop:
- Fever
- Chills
- Increased coughing
- More mucus than usual
- Changes in mucus colour
- Worsening shortness of breath
These symptoms may suggest a lung infection.
Oral Thrush
The budesonide in Symbicort can increase the risk of a fungal infection in the mouth or throat called oral thrush.
Symptoms may include:
- White patches in the mouth
- Mouth or throat soreness
- Hoarseness
- Difficulty swallowing
Rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after taking your regular Symbicort dose to help reduce this risk.
Adrenal Suppression
Budesonide is a corticosteroid.
At higher doses or with long-term use, inhaled corticosteroids can sometimes reduce the body’s natural production of steroid hormones.
The risk may be greater if you:
- Use high doses for a long period
- Recently switched from oral corticosteroids
- Take other corticosteroid medications
Your healthcare provider may monitor you if adrenal suppression is a concern.
Heart and Blood Pressure Effects
Formoterol can affect the heart and circulation.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have:
- Heart disease
- An irregular heartbeat
- High blood pressure
- Other cardiovascular conditions
Contact your healthcare provider if you develop a very fast or irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, or chest pain.
Blood Sugar Changes
Symbicort may increase blood sugar levels in some people.
If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar as directed and tell your healthcare provider if your readings become consistently higher than usual.
Your diabetes treatment may need to be adjusted.
Low Potassium Levels
Beta-2 agonists such as formoterol can sometimes lower potassium levels in the blood.
The risk may be greater if you also take certain diuretics or other medications that affect potassium.
Very low potassium can cause muscle weakness, cramps, or abnormal heart rhythms.
Thyroid Problems
Tell your healthcare provider if you have an overactive thyroid or another thyroid disorder.
Formoterol may make symptoms such as a fast heartbeat, tremor, or nervousness more noticeable in some people.
Allergic Reactions
Serious allergic reactions are rare but can occur.
Seek immediate medical attention if you develop:
- Hives
- Severe rash
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Drug Interactions
Symbicort can interact with other medications.
Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription medications, over-the-counter products, vitamins, supplements, and herbal products you use.
Important interactions may occur with certain:
- Beta-blockers
- Diuretics
- Antidepressants
- Other bronchodilators
- Medications that affect heart rhythm
- Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors
Liver Problems
Budesonide and formoterol are processed in part by the liver.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have significant liver disease because medication levels may be higher and closer monitoring may be needed.
Kidney Problems
Kidney disease is not usually a major reason to avoid Symbicort Turbuhaler, and routine dose adjustment is not generally based on kidney function alone.
However, tell your healthcare provider if you have kidney disease so your overall treatment plan and other medications can be reviewed.
Use Symbicort Exactly as Prescribed
Do not increase the number of inhalations or change how often you use Symbicort without speaking with your healthcare provider.
Contact your healthcare provider if your symptoms are getting worse, you are waking more often at night because of breathing problems, or you need more reliever medication than usual.
