Before using Advair Diskus, tell your healthcare provider and pharmacist if you are allergic to fluticasone, salmeterol, milk proteins, any other medications, foods, or any of the ingredients in the inhaler. Knowing about your allergies can help prevent serious allergic reactions.
If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your healthcare provider before using Advair Diskus. Your healthcare provider can help determine whether this medication is appropriate for you and discuss any potential risks and benefits. If you become pregnant while using Advair Diskus, contact your healthcare provider for advice.
Do not stop using Advair Diskus suddenly unless your healthcare provider tells you to do so. Because the medication contains a corticosteroid, stopping treatment abruptly may lead to unwanted symptoms such as dizziness, headache, fatigue, or stomach upset. If treatment needs to be discontinued, your healthcare provider may recommend gradually reducing your dose over time.
Advair Diskus may increase your risk of respiratory infections, including pneumonia. This is particularly important for people with COPD. Symptoms of pneumonia can sometimes be similar to worsening COPD symptoms and may include increased coughing, fever, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, or changes in mucus production. Contact your healthcare provider if you notice any signs of infection.
When using your inhaler, do not take the device apart or wash any of its components. After each use, close the inhaler properly to help prevent medication from escaping and to protect it from moisture.
If you use more than one inhaled medication, wait at least one minute between inhalers unless instructed otherwise by your healthcare provider. When using multiple inhalers, use Advair Diskus last so that the medication can reach your lungs as effectively as possible.
Advair Diskus may cause a fungal infection of the mouth or throat called thrush. To help reduce this risk, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out after every dose. Do not swallow the rinse water.
Contact your healthcare provider if you develop symptoms of thrush, including:
- White patches inside the mouth or throat
- Soreness or irritation in the mouth
- Pain when swallowing
- Difficulty swallowing
Your healthcare provider may recommend treatment for the infection or adjust your medication if needed.
