Table of contents:

Maxidex Suspension is a medication used to treat certain eye conditions due to inflammation or injury, such as swelling, redness, and itching. It contains dexamethasone. Dexamethasone belongs to a class of drugs known as corticosteroids. It works by relieving symptoms such as swelling, redness, and itching.

Maxidex Suspension is safe to use in the ears because even though it is specially made to account for the fact that the eyes are much more sensitive than ears. It can sometimes be used for the ears if cost or availability of ear drops is an issue.

Use and Dosage

To use Maxitrol for eye problems:

If your doctor does not specifically approve the wearing of contact lenses during treatment with this medication, refrain from wearing them. In case your physician approves your usage of contact lenses, remove them before administering the eye drops, as the preservative content in this medication may get absorbed by the lenses. Wait at least 15 minutes after using the eye drops before reinserting your contact lenses.

Before you use the eye drops:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
  2. Be sure to shake the bottle vigorously in case you are using a suspension form of the medication.

When administering the drops:

  1. Do not allow the dropper tip to touch your eye or any other surface to avoid contamination.
  2. Gently tilt your head back, look upwards, and pull down the lower part of your eyelid to form a pocket.
  3. Position the dropper directly over your eye and put a single drop into the pocket.
  4. Close your eyes slowly for 1-2 minutes while looking downwards and apply gentle pressure on the inner corner of your eye with your finger, close to the nose, to prevent drainage or medication loss.
  5. Do not blink or rub your eyes. Repeat the process for your other eye if necessary and if the dosage is more than one drop.

Use the medication according to the doctor's instructions, and do not wash the dropper. Replace the dropper cap after each use.

To use Maxitrol for ear problems:

Clean and dry the ear canal before application. To avoid touching the ear with the dropper and to ensure the right amount of medication is administered, it is recommended to have another person insert the drops if possible. Before using the medication, hold the container in your hand for a few minutes to warm it up and lower the risk of dizziness.

To administer the ear drops:

  1. Begin by thoroughly washing your hands. To avoid contamination, do not let the dropper or its tip touch your ear or other surfaces.
  2. Shake the bottle well if you are using a suspension form of the medication.

To apply:

  1. Lie on your side or tilt the affected ear upward.
  2. Hold the dropper directly over the ear and put the prescribed number of drops into the ear canal.
  3. To help the drops enter the ear of an adult, hold the earlobe up and back, and for children, hold the earlobe down and back.
  4. Keep the head tilted for 5 minutes or use a soft cotton plug if instructed to do so by your doctor.
  5. Alternatively, your doctor may advise you to place a cotton/gauze plug in the ear canal, moisten it with the medication, and leave it in the ear for 12 to 24 hours or as needed. Be sure to replace the plug at least once daily.
  6. Repeat these steps for the other ear if instructed to do so. Follow your doctor's directions for usage and do not rinse the dropper. After use, replace the dropper cap.

Maxidex Suspension should be used regularly at the same time(s) each day to achieve the maximum benefits. Do not use Maxidex Suspension more or longer than prescribed since doing so can increase the risk of side effects.

The dosage and length of treatment of Maxidex Suspension depends on your response to the medication and medical condition. Follow your doctor's prescription and do not stop using the medication without consulting them as it may worsen your condition. If you notice any darkening of the drops, it is contaminated, and you should avoid using it. Contaminated ear medication can cause infections, serious damage, and hearing loss. Be sure to contact your doctor or pharmacist for further instructions if you experience contamination.

For Maxidex eye and ear drops, please consult your doctor or pharmacist for proper usage instructions as the administration may differ from Maxitrol eye suspension.
