Table of contents:

Isopto Carpine is a medication used in ophthalmology to treat high pressure inside the eye, known as intraocular pressure. It contains the active ingredient pilocarpine, which is a cholinergic agonist that works by reducing the amount of fluid in the eye.

Pilocarpine is most often used as an eye drop to treat glaucoma but is also sometimes used to treat other eye conditions. It typically comes in solution form with various concentrations of pilocarpine hydrochloride, such as 1%, 2% and 4%.

Use and Dosage

Before applying Isopto Carpine eye drops, wash your hands first to prevent contamination. For those wearing contact lenses, remove them prior to using the eye drops. Wait at least 15 minutes before putting your contact lenses back.

For application, tilt your head back, look upward, and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. Take the dropper and place one drop into the pocket. Once the drop is applied, release your eyelid, and close your eyes gently. Place your finger at the corner of your eye near your nose and gently apply pressure for around 1-2 minutes to prevent the medication from draining out. Avoid rubbing or blinking your eye while doing this process.

Repeat the process for the other eye if necessary or if the prescribed dose is more than one drop. Use a tissue to remove excess solution around your eye and wash your hands after application. Do not rinse the dropper but instead replace the cap after use.

Wait at least 5 minutes before using any other eye medication, such as drops or ointments. Eye drops should be used prior to applying ointments to allow eye drops to enter the eye.

If your doctor has prescribed Isopto Carpine eye drops to treat glaucoma or high pressure in the eyes, use it regularly to obtain maximum benefits. Most people with this condition do not have any symptoms, follow the treatment plan prescribed by their doctor, and use the medication at the same time(s) each day.
