Table of contents:

Actigall (ursodiol) is a bile acid used to prevent and dissolve certain types of gallstones. Ursodiol is in a class of medications called gallstone dissolution agents. It works by reducing the cholesterol content of bile, which can help to prevent the formation of new gallstones and dissolve existing ones.

In addition to its use in treating gallstones, Actigall may also be used to treat certain liver diseases, such as primary biliary cirrhosis, in which it works to improve the flow of bile and protect the liver from damage.

Uses and Dosage

Ursodiol is typically taken as a tablet by mouth, with a meal or immediately after eating, usually two or three times a day to treat gallstones and two times a day to prevent gallstones in people who are losing weight quickly. Swallow the tablet and drink a glass of water thereafter. Do not split or chew this oral drug. In addition, do not eat foods that are high in calories or cholesterol and do not take antacids as these may lessen the effectiveness of the drug.

For treating primary biliary cholangitis, the tablets are usually taken 2 or 4 times a day with food. Follow the prescription label carefully and ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist to explain any part that is not understandable.

The recommended adult dosage for Ursodiol tablets, 250 mg, and 500 mg, is 8-10 mg/kg/day, divided into two or three doses. To get the maximum benefit, take ursodiol exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more or less than the prescribed dosage or take it more frequently than recommended. If you miss a dose, you should take it as soon as possible, but you should not take two doses at once to make up for the missed dose.
