Table of contents:

Ceftin Oral Suspension is a medication used for the treatment of bacterial infections. It contains cefuroxime axetil. Cefuroxime is in a class of medications called cephalosporin antibiotics. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.

The oral suspension form is commonly used for pediatric patients aged 3 months to 12 years with mild-to-moderate acute bacterial infections.

Ceftin can be indicated treat certain infections caused by bacteria, such as bronchitis (infection of the airway tubes leading to the lungs); gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted disease); Lyme disease (an infection that may develop after a person is bitten by a tick); and infections of the skin, ears, sinuses, throat, tonsils and urinary tract.

Use and Dosage

Ceftin Oral Suspension is taken by mouth with food, usually twice a day (every 12 hours), as directed by a doctor. The dosage is based on the patient's medical condition and response to treatment. When reconstituted with water, the oral suspension provides the equivalent of 125 mg of cefuroxime (as cefuroxime axetil) per 5 mL.

Shake the bottle well before each dose. Measure the dose out carefully with a medication spoon/cup. Take Ceftin Suspension by mouth with food, usually twice daily (every 12 hours), or as directed by your doctor. Dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. In children, the dosage is also based on weight.

Continue to take Ceftin Suspension until the full-prescribed amount is finished, even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection.

Take the medication exactly as prescribed by a doctor and complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve before the medication is finished. Do not skip doses or stop taking the medication before the prescribed course is completed, as this can lead to the growth of antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
