Table of contents:

Maxidex ointment is a medication used to treat steroid-responsive inflammatory conditions of the palpebral and bulbar conjunctiva, cornea, and anterior segment of the globe such as inflammation, allergic reactions, allergic conjunctivitis, iritis, and keratitis.

Maxidex contains dexamethasone sodium phosphate which is a corticosteroid. It inhibits the action of certain cells and reduces the production of inflammatory substances, including prostaglandins, leukotrienes, and cytokines.

Maxidex ointment is used to treat post-operative inflammation and to suppress graft reaction. It should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to any components of the product and should not be administered to treat viral, fungal, or bacterial infections of the eye.

Use and Dosage

Maxidex ointment should be applied to the affected eye(s) as directed by your healthcare provider or veterinarian. It is usually applied once or twice a day, and the treatment duration may vary depending on the underlying condition.

The usual recommended dose is a small amount of the ointment applied to the affected eye, 3 to 4 times daily. The dose may be reduced to once daily depending on the response and the condition being treated.

To use the eye ointment, follow these instructions:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.
  2. Use a mirror or have someone else apply the ointment.
  3. Avoid touching the tip of the tube against your eye or anything else. The ointment must be kept clean.
  4. Tilt your head forward slightly.
  5. Holding the tube between your thumb and index finger, place the tube as near as possible to your eyelid without touching it.
  6. Brace the remaining fingers of that hand against your cheek or nose.
  7. With the index finger of your other hand, pull the lower lid of your eye down to form a pocket.
  8. Place a small amount of ointment into the pocket made by the lower lid and the eye. A 1/2-inch (1.25-centimeter) strip of ointment usually is enough unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
  9. Gently close your eyes and keep them closed for 1 to 2 minutes to allow the medication to be absorbed.
  10. Replace and tighten the cap right away.
  11. Wipe off any excess ointment from your eyelids and lashes with a clean tissue. Wash your hands again.

Use ointment exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Cautions

  • Avoiding prolonged use of Maxidex ointment due to risk of ocular side effects like increased eye pressure (glaucoma), blurred vision, and visual problems. Short-term use is recommended whenever possible.
  • Following your veterinarian's directions and cautions carefully if using the ointment for veterinary purposes, since drugs can have bioequivalence issues in animals.
  • Steroids like dexamethasone in Maxidex can cause increased intraocular pressure and trigger steroid-induced glaucoma. Regular eye check-ups are recommended during treatment.
  • Using Maxidex as prescribed and reporting any vision changes or other side effects to your doctor right away. Steroid eye drops require close monitoring.
  • Avoiding use of the medication if you have an ocular viral or fungal infection, since steroids can worsen certain infections.
  • Following proper hygiene when administering the ointment, to reduce the risk of contamination and infection.
  • Discontinuing use and seeking medical attention right away if you experience an allergic reaction to the medication, such as difficulty breathing, hives, or swelling of the face, tongue, or throat.
  • Informing your doctor or pharmacist of all medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking before using Maxidex ointment, since it may interact with certain drugs.
  • Keeping the medication out of reach of children and pets since it can be harmful if swallowed or used improperly.
