Table of contents:

Creon is a prescription medication used to aid digestion in people who have a condition called exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). EPI occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough digestive enzymes to break down food in the small intestine.

Creon helps people who cannot digest food normally because their pancreas does not make enough enzymes due to cystic fibrosis, swelling of the pancreas that lasts a long time (chronic pancreatitis), removal of some, or all, of the pancreas (pancreatectomy), or other conditions.

Creon contains a combination of three enzymes: lipase, protease, and amylase, which help to break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates, respectively. It is a delayed-release pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy (PERT) that works by replacing the three main pancreatic enzymes that are normally made by a healthy pancreas.

Use and Dosage

Creon 25 is available in capsule form and should be taken by mouth with meals and snacks as directed by your doctor. The capsule should be swallowed whole, without crushing or chewing it, and should not be kept in the mouth to avoid irritation.

If swallowing is difficult, the capsule may be opened and the contents mixed with a small amount of soft food or liquid that does not require chewing, such as room-temperature applesauce. However, avoid mixing the contents with alkaline foods or liquids such as milk, ice cream, or tea, and consult your doctor or pharmacist for a list of foods to avoid. Swallow the mixture immediately without chewing and drink a glass of water or juice to ensure it is swallowed completely. Do not store the medication mixture for later.

Dosage of Creon 25 is based on your medical condition, diet, weight, and response to treatment, and you should not take more capsules in a day than prescribed by your doctor. Drinking plenty of fluids while taking Creon 25 capsules is encouraged, unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.

For the medication to be most effective, use it regularly with every meal or snack recommended by your doctor. If you are following a special diet as advised by your doctor, comply with the diet to achieve the maximum benefit from the medication.

  • Caution should be exercised when using the medication in patients with a history of allergies or hypersensitivity to pork products.
  • Creon 25 is not recommended for use in patients who are allergic to pork.
  • CREON and other pancreatic enzyme products are made from the pancreas of pigs, the same pigs people eat as pork. These pigs may carry viruses. The risk of having this condition may be reduced by following the dosing instructions that your doctor gave you.
  • Do not crush or chew CREON capsules or their contents, and do not hold the capsule or capsule contents in your mouth. Crushing, chewing, or holding the CREON capsules in your mouth may cause irritation in your mouth. Talk to your doctor or consult the CREON Medication Guide for how to take CREON if you have trouble swallowing capsules. Always take CREON with a meal or snack and enough liquid to swallow CREON completely. Take CREON exactly as your doctor tells you.
  • Potential for interactions with other medications.
  • Risk of viral transmission with all pancreatic enzyme products, including Creon.
