Table of contents:

Zymar is an antibiotic eye medication used to treat bacterial infections of the eyes. It is a sterile eye drop used to treat bacterial eye infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) and corneal ulcers. It contains an active ingredient called Gatifloxacin. Gatifloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics.

Gatifloxacin works by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that help in replication, transcription, and repair of bacterial DNA. By inhibiting these enzymes, Zymar prevents the bacteria from multiplying and kills them off, thus treating the infection.

Use and Dosage

Zymar is administered as eye drops and should be instilled into the eyes every two hours while awake for two days (up to eight times daily), followed by two to four instillations per day for five days. Use Zymar eye drops at consistent times each day, following the directions on your prescription label carefully.

To use the Zymar eye drops:

  1. Wash your hands before using the medication.
  2. Tilt your head back and look at the ceiling.
  3. Gently pull down the lower eyelid, creating a small pocket.
  4. Turn the bottle upside down and gently apply one drop into the affected eye.
  5. Let go of the lower lid and close your eyes for half a minute.

Use Zymar Eye drops exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not instill a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
