Table of contents:

Yaz birth control is an oral birth control medication used to control unplanned pregnancy. It can be indicated to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) or moderate acne if you have chosen to use birth control pills as your method of pregnancy prevention.

Yaz is a combination birth control pill that contains two hormones, drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. The combination works by preventing a woman's egg from fully developing each month, which makes it unable to accept sperm and fertilize, thus preventing pregnancy.

Use and Dosage

YAZ Birth Control 28 day is available in tablet form to be taken orally as instructed by a doctor, with or without food, usually once a day. Select a convenient time of day to take the tablet and take it at the same time every day, 24 hours apart. Taking the tablet after the evening meal or at bedtime may help relieve nausea and stomach upset.

Each pill pack contains 24 active pills (with hormones) and 4 reminder pills (without hormones) at the end of the pack. Take one active pill daily for 24 days in a row, followed by one reminder pill daily for 4 days in a row unless otherwise directed by a doctor. Menstruation usually occurs within 3 days after taking the last active tablet during the fourth week of the pack. Start a new pack the day after taking the last inactive tablet, regardless of menstruation. Consult a doctor if menstruation does not occur.

For first-time use, take the first tablet in the pack on the first Sunday following the beginning of your menstrual period or on the first day of your period. If the period starts on a Sunday, start taking the medication on that day. For the first usage cycle only, use an additional non-hormonal birth control method for the first 7 days to prevent pregnancy until the medication has sufficient time to function. No backup birth control is required in the first week if the medication is started on the first day of the period.

Follow the package instructions to find the first tablet, start with the first tablet in the pack, and take them in the correct order. Missing pills, starting a new pack late, or taking the pill at a different time of day than usual may increase the risk of pregnancy.

Cautions

  • Increased Risk of blood clots: YAZ Birth Control may increase the risk of developing blood clots, which can be life-threatening. This risk may be higher for women who smoke, are older than 35 years, or have a history of blood clotting disorders.
  • Increased Risk of stroke: Like all hormonal contraceptives, YAZ Birth Control also carries a slight increased risk of stroke.
  • Hormonal side effects: Some women may experience hormonal side effects, such as mood changes, headache, nausea, and breast tenderness.
  • Interaction with other medications: YAZ Birth Control may interact with other medications, including certain antibiotics and antifungal medications, and may reduce their effectiveness.
  • Limited effectiveness against sexually transmitted infections: YAZ Birth Control is not effective against sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and the use of condoms or other barrier methods is still recommended to prevent STIs.

  • Impact on bone density: There may be a slight decrease in bone density in some women taking YAZ Birth Control.
