Table of contents:

Proventil HFA Inhaler is a pressurized metered-dose aerosol unit for oral inhalation used to treat or prevent bronchospasm in people with reversible obstructive airway disease, and to prevent exercise-induced bronchospasm.

Proventil contains a microcrystalline suspension of albuterol sulfate. Its active ingredient is albuterol sulfate, also known as salbutamol, which is a beta-2 agonist. It works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the airways, allowing more air to flow into the lungs. When the inhaler is used, the albuterol is delivered as an aerosol mist directly to the lungs, where it acts quickly to open the air passages and relieve symptoms of bronchospasm, such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath.

Use and Dosage

To use Proventil HFA Inhaler, first shake the inhaler well and test spray it in the air three times for ProAir HFA or four times for Proventil HFA and Ventolin HFA before using it for the first time, or if it has not been used for more than 2 weeks. Then, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the cap from the mouthpiece.
  2. Shake the inhaler well and breathe out completely.
  3. Hold the inhaler with the mouthpiece down and place it between your lips without biting it, forming a tight seal.
  4. Start breathing in slowly and deeply through your mouth, and at the same time, press down firmly on the canister to release one puff of the medicine.
  5. Continue to breathe in slowly and deeply for a few more seconds, and then hold your breath for up to 10 seconds, if possible.
  6. Take the inhaler out of your mouth and breathe out slowly through pursed lips.
  7. If your doctor has prescribed more than one inhalation at a time, wait at least 1 minute before repeating steps 2-6.

Make sure to read the full instructions for use that come with the inhaler before using it and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions about how to use it.
