Table of contents:

Monopril HCT (fosinopril sodium-hydrochlorothiazide) is a combination ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor and diuretic used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It can be used to treat edema (fluid retention; excess fluid held in body tissues) caused by various medical problems, including heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat edema caused by using certain medications including estrogen and corticosteroids.

Fosinopril belongs to a class of drugs known as ACE inhibitors. It works by relaxing blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily.

Use and Dosage

Monopril hctz is available in the form of a tablet, which can be taken orally with or without food, as recommended by your doctor, usually once a day. Taking this medication too close to bedtime may lead to waking up to urinate, so it is best to take it at least 4 hours before bedtime. If you have any concerns regarding the timing of taking the medication, consult your doctor or pharmacist.

The dosage of monopril hctz varies depending on your response to treatment and medical condition. Taking antacids containing aluminum or magnesium or certain cholesterol-lowering drugs such as bile acid-binding resins can reduce the absorption of monopril hctz; therefore, it is best to take them at least 2 or 4-6 hours apart from this medication, respectively.

Taking monopril hctz regularly, preferably at the same time each day, will ensure maximum benefit from the medication. It may take several weeks before you experience the full benefit of this medication. Even if you feel well, continue taking monopril hctz as prescribed. People with high blood pressure usually do not exhibit any symptoms of illness. If your routine blood pressure readings remain high or increase, inform your doctor immediately.
