MetroGel (scientifically known as metronidazole) is a prescription topical medication used to treat the symptoms of rosacea, a skin condition that causes redness, flushing, and sometimes pimples on the face.   3. Apply a thin layer of gel to the affected area, avoiding the eyes and the mouth. Rub in gently.
  4. Wash your hands again after applying the gel.
  5. If you are using the gel twice per day, apply it once in the morning and once in the evening, about 12 hours apart.
  6. Do not cover the affected area with a bandage or dressing, unless instructed to do so by your doctor.
