Table of contents:

Fostimon is a medication used to stimulate egg production in women who are not ovulating and who have not responded to other treatments. It is used in assisted reproductive technology, specifically in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles.

Fostimon contains urofollitropin, which is a form of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). It works by stimulating egg production in the ovaries and promoting ovulation in women who are not ovulating or who have not responded to other treatments.

Use and Dosage

Fostimon is available in different strengths, including 75 IU and 150 IU, and is administered via injection. To use a Fostimon vial, you must first prepare the solution just before injection. One vial is for single use only.

To prepare the Fostimon injection, follow these steps:

  1. The ampoule neck is designed to break easily below the coloured dot. Gently flick the top of the ampoule to dislodge any remaining liquid and then hold the ampoule with the colored dot facing away from you. Snap off the top of the ampoule and use a cloth or ampoule-snapper to hold it securely. Place the opened ampoule upright on a clean surface.
  2. Remove the plastic cap from the powder vial by pushing it upwards. Disinfect the rubber stopper on top of the vial using an alcohol swab and allow it to dry.
  3. Attach the reconstitution needle (a large needle) to the syringe and remove the protective cap. Hold the syringe in one hand and insert the needle into the opened solvent ampoule, drawing up all the solvent into the syringe. Attach the protective cap to the needle and carefully set the syringe down on the surface.
  4. Slowly inject the solvent into the powder vial through the middle of the rubber stopper. Press the plunger down firmly to squirt all the solution onto the powder. Do not shake the vial, but gently roll it between your hands until the powder is completely dissolved, taking care to avoid creating foam.
  5. Once the powder is dissolved, remove the needle shield and, while the needle is still inserted, turn the vial upside down, making sure the needle tip is below the level of the liquid. Slowly pull the plunger up to draw all the solution up into the syringe. Check that the reconstituted solution is clear and colourless before using it.

By following these steps carefully, you should be able to prepare the injection accurately and safely. Always follow the instructions provided by your healthcare provider when using Fostimon, and never reuse a vial or share your injection equipment with others.
