Adverse Effects of Certain Antibiotics on Muscle Disorders

Filled Medicine CabinetSymptoms of muscle disorders include pain, muscle weakness and spasms. There are different types of muscles disorders including muscular dystrophy, which involves the degeneration of movement-controlling skeletal muscles, and myasthenia gravis, which is an autoimmune disorder. Physicians usually prescribe antibiotics to treat different kinds of inflammation affecting the muscles of people with such disorders. In some cases, additional prescription or over-the-counter medication may also be taken by people with myasthenia gravis to treat other ailments or symptoms and these other drugs can interfere with or adversely affect symptoms of muscular diseases.

Certain antibiotics have actually been reported as having adverse effects on muscle disorders and make the associated symptoms that people feel quite worse. A class of broad-spectrum antibiotics that was publicly declared as one of the types of antibiotics that worsens muscle disorders is known as fluroquinolone. There are different antibiotics that make up the fluroquinolone antibiotics class including Avelox, Cipro, Cipro XL and Levaquin. These drugs are made by Bayer Inc. and Janssen Inc. The companies informed the general public of potential effects these antibiotics could have on people who have pre-existing muscular diseases. The fluoroquinolones can make weakness that occurs in patients with disorders such as myasthenia gravis much worse.

Hence, it is important for people who have such disorders to communicate effectively with their doctors regarding the additional impacts fluoroquinolones can have on the weakness they currently feel while coping with a muscular disorder. Symptom of myasthenia gravis can become much worse if people with the disorder continue to take such antibiotics. Apart from fluoroquinolones, other antibiotics have also been known to exacerbate conditions such as myasthenia gravis and these antibiotics include tetracycline, macrolides, chloroquine and aminoglycosides.

There are other medications which can be used to treat or help manage muscle disorder and these medications may present better alternatives to the fluoquinolones. Corticosteriods can help deter muscle degeneration. Some patients may also benefit from immunosupressants which can slow down muscles that are attempting to die. However, the main reason for prescribing antibiotics is to tackle the inflammation that is the main reaction in people who have autoimmune diseases. While corticosteroids and immunosupressants are still helpful, autoimmune diseases are characterized by the immune system of the body attacking cell and tissues within the body. To tackle the root cause of the problem, treatment options for autoimmune diseases can include hormone replacement therapy and enzyme replacement therapy.

Other treatments that have been found to treat short-term myasthenia gravis exacerbations include plasmapheresis. Similarly, thymectomy has been successfully used to provide high percentages of remission in some patients and some physicians may prescribe neostigmine and anticholinesterase. Although medications may not totally cure a person of myasthenia gravis, these drugs can help people manage the symptoms of the disease.
