Herbal Medicine for Erectile Dysfunction – Powerful Natural Remedies

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction plagues millions of men in the United States, straining otherwise healthy sexual relationships. According to the Cleveland Clinic Center for Continuing Education, the prevalence of erectile dysfunction affects about 40% of men over the age of 40 years. I was not surprised to find out that men aged 70-years and older have a prevalence exceeding 70%, too.

Before the advent of brand name pharmaceuticals, like Cialis 20 mg, treatments for erectile dysfunction were only minimally effective. I have heard my fair share of feel-good testimonials from couples, who have rekindled the fires of their sex lives by using generic prescription drugs such as Sildenafil 100 mg. Although, the truth about treating erectile dysfunction is that drugs are not the only treatment option available. Herbal medicines are getting a second look from the medical community, and the evidence looks promising.

Defining Erectile Dysfunction

I am certain that the definition of erectile dysfunction seems self-explanatory, but there are a few myths that first need to be debunked. Mainly, erectile dysfunction is not a natural part of the aging process, contrary to popular misconception. The inability to achieve and maintain an erection is also clinically distinct from the loss of sexual appetite and an inability to climax during sex.

Doctors have narrowed down the causes of erectile dysfunction very well. Personally, I believe psychological factors play a larger role than the hard statistics dictate. Nonetheless, medical causes include diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, nerve damage, low testosterone, substance abuse, and even certain medications are well known to trigger sexual dysfunction. Since older men have a higher risk of developing these conditions, erectile dysfunction corresponds to old age.

Natural Herbal Treatments

To my surprise, natural remedies for erectile dysfunction, like Ginseng, carry many of the same health risks as pharmaceuticals. The shear powers of herbal medicines have been recognized for centuries, but modern medicine is only beginning to unveil this truth. Herbal Viagra-like products are so potent that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned several “herbal Viagras” a few years ago.

Say what you will about the FDA’s removal of “herbal Viagras” from the market, but the truth is that herbal remedies can potentially cause harmful side effects, regardless of how organically they are grown. For example, Ginkgo is well known to increase the risk of uncontrollable bleeding. Also, ingesting excessive amounts of zinc can also trigger immune system dysfunctions, according to information provided by the Mayo Clinic.

Recently, the medical community has started to investigate the effectiveness of Yohimbe, an African tree bark, which has been used for centuries in Zaire and Gabon. Clinically speaking, Yohimbine, the tree bark’s active ingredient, appears to increase blood flow to the genitals as well as stimulate nerve impulses, too. Even the National Institute of Health is beginning to recognize Yohimbine as a possible candidate to counter-act the sexual side effects of other chemical compounds. In my opinion, Yohimbe is one of the most exciting natural remedies for erectile dysfunction available today.

Yes, other herbal treatments for erectile dysfunction exist, but Yohimbe bark is getting a long, hard look from the medical community. The upcoming research will determine whether the benefits of ingesting Yohimbe outweigh the health risks.
