Diamox

Diamox is used to treat glaucoma, epilepsy (for both brief and unlocalized seizures), and fluid retention due to congestive heart failure or drugs. It is also used to prevent or relieve the symptoms of acute mountain sickness in climbers attempting a rapid climb and those who feel sick even though they are making a gradual climb.

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; if you are taking any other prescription medicine, nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; if you are taking high doses of aspirin; if you have any other medical conditions; if you are allergic to any ingredient in this medicine.

Important Information about Diamox

Do not take Diamox with aspirin as it can result in loss of appetite, sluggishness, and rapid breathing to unresponsiveness and can be fatal. Use caution while driving or operating any machinery as it may cause drowsiness or dizziness.

Diamox may increase the sensitivity of your skin to sunlight. Use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing when exposure to the sun is unavoidable.

Before taking Diamox, tell your doctor if you

  • are on aspirin therapy;
  • have liver disease;
  • have kidney disease;
  • have heart disease;
  • have lung disease, or
  • have a hormonal disease.

Diamox Side Effects

Most severe (require immediate medical attention): Convulsions; severe allergic reaction (rash; hives; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, tongue, and lips; difficulty breathing) dark, bloody stools; blood in the urine; vision changes.

Most common: Tingling in the hands and feet; ringing in the ears; changes in hearing; loss of appetite; changes in taste; nausea; vomiting; diarrhea; frequent urination. Drowsiness, confusion, sensitivity to sunlight, fever.
