What is Synthroid/Levothyroxine used for?

Synthroid (Levothyroxine) is a medication used to treat hypothyroidism and also treats and prevents goiter.

How should I take Synthroid/Levothyroxine?

How much medicine you take and how often you take it depend on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking, talk with your health care provider. Do not stop taking this medicine without checking with your health care provider. Patients with previous medical conditions should talk with their health care provider before taking this medicine. Do not take more medicine than prescribed unless advised to do so by your health care provider. Do not take any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your health care provider. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your health care provider. If more than one dose is missed, contact your health care provider or pharmacist. Make sure Synthroid (Levothyroxine)is taken with a full glass of water because Synthroid (Levothyroxine)can dissolve very quickly and if it is caught in the throat, it will swell and cause choking or gagging. Take the medication on an empty stomach 30 minutes before your meal. Synthroid (Levothyroxine)may take several weeks before the body responds to the medication. Do not suddenly stop taking Synthroid, even if you feel better. Regular blood tests will be made to ensure the medication is helping the condition. It is important to attend all schedule doctor appointments.

How should Synthroid/Levothyroxine be stored?

Store at room temperature. Protect from moisture and heat.

When should Synthroid/Levothyroxine not be taken?

Do not use Synthroid (Levothyroxine)if you have had a heart attack, have thyrotoxicosis, or an adrenal gland problem that is not controlled by treatment.

What precautions should I follow when taking Synthroid/Levothyroxine?

Before using this medicine, tell your health care provider about any of the following: if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding; if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine; if you have heart disease, coronary artery disease, anemia, diabetes, problems with your pituitary or adrenal glands or a history of blood clots.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Synthroid/Levothyroxine?

Majority of the patients taking Synthroid (Levothyroxine)will need to take it for the rest of their life. Taking the medication this long period of time may cause bone loss leading to osteoporosis.

What are the side effects of Synthroid/Levothyroxine?

Most severe:Severe: Allergic reaction including hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat; headache; sleep problems (insomnia); nervous or irritable feeling; fever, hot flashes, sweating; changes in your menstrual periods; appetite changes, weight changes.


Most common:Common: Mild hair loss.
