What is Arava/Leflunomide used for?

Arava is used to reduce the signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, and to improve physical function and to prevent the structural damage to joints from occurring.

How should I take Arava/Leflunomide?

Arava should be taken exactly as it was prescribed. Arava may be taken with or without food. Arava may take 4 weeks or longer to show signs of improvement. If a dose of Arava is missed, make sure to take it as soon as possible, unless it is almost time for your next dose. In case it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take Arava regularly. Don’t take 2 doses at once.

How should Arava/Leflunomide be stored?

Arava should be stored at room temperature and kept away from moisture, heat, and light.

When should Arava/Leflunomide not be taken?

Arava should not be taken if you are allergic to any ingredients in the medication, if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding, taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, herbal preparations, or supplements, if you have any allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances, if you have a weakened immune system, blood or bone marrow disorders, an infection or have recently received a vaccination, if you have hepatitis B or C, or any other liver problems, kidney problems, or drink alcoholic beverages.

What precautions should I follow when taking Arava/Leflunomide?

Drinking alcohol while taking Arava could increase the chance of liver problems. Avoid receiving vaccines while using Arava. Arava should not be used in persons under the age of 18. Because Arava can cause birth defects in children of men using Arava, always use reliable birth control methods. Discontinue use of Arava if you and your female partner are planning on having a child. Arava may cause harm to an unborn child and must be avoided during pregnancy. Do not breast-feed while taking Arava.

What special warning(s) should I be aware of when taking Arava/Leflunomide?

If you develop a skin rash, small blisters over a large portion of your body, or lesions around the eyes, mouth, or throat contact your doctor immediately. If your menstrual flow is delayed or if you think you may be pregnant you must undergo a procedure to flush out all the medicine in your body.

What are the side effects of Arava/Leflunomide?

Most severe:Serious side effects of Arava may include: allergic reaction; blistering or peeling skin; blisters on the inside of eyes, nose, or mouth; chest pain; dark urine; easy bruising/bleeding; feelings of numbness or tingling; fever; infection; muscle cramps; pale skin; pale stools; sore throat; stomach pain; unusual tiredness; vomiting; yellowing of the eyes or skin.
