Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Xifaxan, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule.
Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
Risk of Severe Diarrhea
Like other antibiotics, Xifaxan may increase the risk of a bacterial infection called Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile). This infection can cause symptoms ranging from mild diarrhea to severe inflammation of the colon (colitis).
Contact your healthcare provider if:
- Your diarrhea does not improve
- Your diarrhea becomes worse
- You develop severe or persistent diarrhea during or after treatment
Serious Side Effects
Xifaxan may cause serious side effects, including:
- Severe stomach or abdominal pain
- Watery diarrhea
Seek medical attention if you experience severe or persistent symptoms.
Drug Interactions
Xifaxan may interact with other prescription medications, over-the-counter products, vitamins, or herbal supplements.
Before starting treatment, tell your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking. Keeping an up-to-date list of your products can help prevent potential drug interactions.
Allergic Reactions
Do not take Xifaxan if you are allergic to:
- Rifaximin
- Other rifamycin antibiotics
- Any ingredient in Xifaxan
Tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of allergic reactions to these medications.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your healthcare provider before taking Xifaxan.
Your healthcare provider can help determine whether Xifaxan is appropriate for you and discuss any potential risks to your baby.
Liver Disease
Tell your healthcare provider if you have severe liver impairment. Liver problems may increase the effects of Xifaxan and may require additional monitoring during treatment.
