Salt Banned in NYC

The city that never sleeps is implementing a new bylaw to save lives, although not in the way that you would expect. The New York City Health Department is taking the initiative to promote healthy living – by organizing the National Salt Reduction Initiative, a plan to reduce the average use of sodium within packaged and restaurant food by twenty percent within the next five years. The average American today consumes about twice the recommended quotient of salt per day, which explains the unnatural increase in heart attacks and strokes within the last decade.

Too much salt raises the risk of many cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension (or high blood pressure), strokes and heart attacks, causing approximately 800,000 deaths in the United States alone every year. Most of the salt consumed in an average person’s diet comes not from their saltshaker, but is added to food before it reaches the local supermarket. The New York City Health Department predicts that by reducing the salt content in consumer products and restaurant food, within five years the sodium intake of all Americans will be reduced by twenty percent.

Although salt is proven to contribute to high blood pressure, which amounts to billions of dollars in healthcare expenses, food scientists are concerned that people may actually suffer from the implements of the National Salt Reduction Initiative, as people can suffer from having too little salt. For example, iodized salt, which contains iodine, is an important factor that your body needs to produce the thyroid hormone, which is crucial in fetal and infant brain development. The lack of thyroid hormone development is extremely consequential, causing cretinism in many cases of iodine deficiency. Food scientists have also noted that other consumers in Europe actually intake about forty percent more salt than the average American, but because of their balanced diet containing many vegetables, they have excellent cardiovascular health. It is possible that the medical crisis surrounding the effects of high blood pressure may have little to do with salt, and more to do with having a balanced diet and plenty of vegetables.

It is unclear whether this new initiative will significantly impact the severity of the medical issues surrounding high blood pressure; however the National Salt Reduction Initiative marks an important step towards healthy living and better regulation of the quality of processed food.

Coffee May Help Prevent Prostate Cancer

To the fellow male coffee drinkers out there, I have amazing news (sorry ladies, this one is just for the guys). A study on coffee and its effect on prostate cancer was presented at the Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research conference in Houston, Texas, that showed a great deal of promise. The finding of the study showed that men who regularly drink coffee have a significantly lower risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer. However, before anyone (mostly me) jumps to any sort of final conclusion, the study will require further investigation, and I’m sure there will be a multitude of studies just to follow up this one.

At this point in time I would just like to point out that coffee is really proving itself as a drink that will help your health not harm it. Coffee is mostly a good thing, (yes there are those few black marks on coffee’s record) it has proven its ability to restore energy, focus the mind, decrease the severity of heart attacks or stroke, help protect against some cancers, type 2 diabetes, liver disease, and gallstones. Studies have shown that coffee helps prevent cavities, boosts a person’s mood, and helps stop headaches.

Remember if anyone asks why you drink coffee, you can tell them that you think the taste is awesome (which it is). And you can also tell them because of all the health benefits coffee provides. They’ll probably be confused due to the common misconception that coffee is bad for you, but you will know and that’s all that matters. After that, just walk away and feel like a champ, I know I would. Then go to the nearest coffee shop and buy yourself a victory cup.

Foreign Accent Syndrome

Yes, that’s right. There is actually an explanation for the accent Madonna puts on from time to time. Foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is a speech disorder that results in the changes of a person’s speech pattern, intonation, and pronunciation. The usual cause of this is severe trauma to the brain, for example a stroke. However, the condition develops within one to two years of the injury.

Since the 1940′s there have only been about 60 documented cases of FAS. Unfortunately not very many of those suffering from FAS are able to regain their original accent. A woman from England suffered a stroke at the age of 60. When she recovered she had a Jamaican accent.

There are very interesting cases even before people were properly documenting the condition. A young Norwegian woman suffered a head injury during an air-raid in 1941. When she recovered she had developed a strong German accent. As you can imagine Germany wasn’t necessarily the most popular country in 1941, and the young woman was shunned by many of the members of the community. It’s very sad, but also very interesting to learn of the kind of devastating effects a person’s accent has on their life.

Unfortunately, scientists have not discovered exactly what causes the person’s accent to change. When they do, hopefully they will discover a way to also reverse the damage and restore the original accent. One can only hope.

How to Lower High Blood Pressure

Many people don’t realize how bad high blood pressure can be for your body, and even more don’t know how to lower high blood pressure even after they know they have it. High blood pressure can lead to early damage of the blood vessels and heart. This can cause strokes, kidney problems, and heart disease.

Because high blood pressure does not normally present any sort of symptoms it is important to get you blood pressure tested regularly. There are ways though that you can help keep your blood pressure down and decrease the risk of any potential outcomes of high blood pressure.

  • Don’t smoke cigarettes or use any tobacco product.
  • Try to lose weight if you’re overweight
  • Moderate intensity exercise 30 to 60 minutes, 4 to 7 days per week
  • Limit how much sodium you eat.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.
  • Eat foods containing enough potassium, calcium and magnesium.
  • Avoid fat and cholesterol.
  • Try relaxation techniques

There are also medications that can be taken to help lower your blood pressure. Medications are important and you may need to take them, but switching your lifestyle habits will make you healthier and if you don’t have high blood pressure may save you from developing it in the first place.

How To Lower Cholesterol

A problem many people seem to be having is high cholesterol. Even though an incredible amount of people are aware of the risks with high cholesterol very few actually decide to change their way of living. Why? Who knows, maybe they are comfortable and are worried that lowering their cholesterol will cause a dramatic change that will disrupt their current state of content. However, for most people this is untrue. Before looking at ways to prevent high cholesterol lets take a look at what cholesterol is.

First and foremost, not all cholesterol is bad. You actually need cholesterol for your body to be healthy, but having too much can increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. Because cholesterol can build up in your arteries, it may lead to a blockage resulting in a very dangerous situation.

There are two types of cholesterol one that is bad for you body and another that’s good for your body. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are bad because they tend to build up in your arteries, exactly what you don’t want. However, high-density lipoproteins (HDL) are good for your body because they help remove cholesterol from the bloodstream.

There are some things you can do to lower cholesterol levels. Eating healthier foods can lower the levels of LDL in your body and you also might feel better in general with a better diet. If you smoke try quitting, this will increase the HDL levels and help remove some of that bad cholesterol that might become a serious health hazard. If you’re overweight try to drop a few pounds, you’ll feel better, look better, and your health will be better. Also, make sure you exercise on a regular basis.
