Here Comes the Sun – Vitamin D Treatment For Depression

Filed under: Depression — Tags: Depression, depression treatment, treat depression, vitamin d3 — Nicole @ 8:49 pm

Vitamin D3, Depression SymptomsIt’s called the sunshine vitamin for a reason, and not just because it comes from the sun. If you’ve ever noticed that your mood has been drastically improved by the bright sunshine of the morning, studies have shown that it probably had something to do with the production of vitamin D in your skin, which occurs naturally when your skin is exposed to sunlight. Recent studies have concluded that there is a link between a lack of vitamin D and symptoms of depression. Although vitamin D deficiency has not been confirmed as a definite cause for depression, this new link opens up many new and inexpensive treatment options for patients with depression.

Vitamin D is not a naturally occurring vitamin in food, but it can easily be obtained through sun exposure and vitamin D3 supplements. Vitamin D rich foods include sweet potatoes, sprouts, mushrooms, sunflower seeds, salmon and other seafood products, as well as fortified milk and juice. For many patients with depression, an increased intake of vitamin D works as an effective bonus treatment, which comes free with a fresh walk outdoors. Those who enjoy a high intake of vitamin D will also experience a decreased risk of diabetes, autoimmune disorders, cancer and heart disease.

While depression isn’t likely to be caused or cured by the subtraction or addition of just one factor, the link of low levels of vitamin D to depression is a great reason to spend more time outdoors in the sunshine. If you find that you continually experience burning in the mouth or throat, constipation, dental cavities, insomnia, joint pains, muscle cramps, or frequent colds or flu; you may have a vitamin D deficiency that could increase your risk of depression along with many conditions. If you find that you aren’t able to get enough vitamin D from sun exposure and food supplement, talk to your doctor about taking a multivitamin or vitamin D3 supplement.

Mandatory High Cholesterol Screening For Kids

Despite all the high cholesterol screenings being conducted left, right, and centre, kids are being left out. A recent study finds that some children who have a genetic case of high cholesterol would benefit from medications for high cholesterol. Ten percent of children who have high cholesterol are missed in these screenings.

It was discovered in the study that 36 percent of children who have high cholesterol that is treatable by medication have been missed in cholesterol screen tests. It was also found by taking lipid tests in West Virginia that 71 percent of the children meet screening requirements based solely on their family history. If cholesterol screenings were mandatory it is thought that early diagnosis would be beneficial for children.

The only loophole in this plan is putting children on medication that they may have to rely on for their entire lives. This may be best not to start at such a young age. Obesity levels were not taken into account in this study.

Tea and Coffee Can Reduce the Risk of CHD

Filed under: heart disease — Tags: coffee, coronary heart disease, heart disease, risk, tea — Tanveen @ 9:49 pm

In a recent study, it was found that drinking a moderate amount of tea and/or coffee can decrease the risk of CHD (Coronary Heart Disease). Many people around the world, and especially in the United States, are suffering from CHD. Some of you may be wondering what CHD actually is. Well, it is a type of heat disease that involves the blood vessels becoming narrower and thus not transporting sufficient amounts of oxygenated blood to the heart.

In terms of how much to drink, approximately two to three cups of coffee will decrease the risk of CHD. For tea, pretty much the more you drink the more you will benefit. About six cups of tea showed the best results. In addition to lowering the risk of CHD, tea can also play a role in decreasing the mortality rate.

Although coffee and tea can be beneficial, it is also important to weigh the negative effects they have. For example coffee and tea both contain caffeine. In fact, coffee contains two times the amount of caffeine than in tea. Caffeine can cause many health problems.

The study stating that moderate amounts of tea or coffee can decrease the risk of developing CHD was performed in the Netherlands. The tea and coffee used in this experiment was what most people in the Netherlands drink. Filter coffee as made in the Netherlands and black tea were used. The results pertain to only these types of drinks. Other types of tea and coffee may not have as much of an effect or none at all.

Three Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Wear Fragrance

Filed under: allergy, asthma — Tags: allergy, asthma, breast cancer, prostate cancer — Nicole @ 9:14 pm

perfume, smellIt’s become a common fact that beauty must come with a price, and with the current fragrances and perfumes on the market today, that’s certainly become a reality. The concept of perfume originated long before the Common Era, and has developed throughout the centuries to become the personalized fragrance that today women associate with not only beauty, but also with class and individuality. As the perfume industry has been commercialized, so too have the industrial practices of manufacturing fragrances. The ingredients of modern perfumes are still held under lock and key and legally kept secret under the protection of old laws. A recent study that was conducted by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics revealed that most of the perfumes and male fragrances on the market today contain approximately fourteen unlisted chemicals, most of which have never been tested for safety.

This study additionally outlined several health risks associated with wearing perfumes:

Allergies – Many of the unlisted chemical ingredients in today’s leading fragrances are associated with allergic reactions including asthma, headaches, wheezing and contact dermatitis. These sensitizing chemicals are known to additionally increase the chance of allergy development in people who are repeatedly exposed to them.

Hormone Disruption – Each of the seventeen perfumes tested in this study were found to contain at least one hormone disrupting chemical. Hormone disrupting chemicals have been proven to increase the risk of cancers, especially prostate cancer and breast cancer, as well as to contribute to thyroid problems. Chemicals containing hormone disruptors have also been linked to birth defects and infertility.

Inhalation and Absorption – The nature of modern day fragrances allow for the chemicals ingredients to be absorbed topically into the skin and inhaled. These unnatural and toxic chemicals have been found by various studies in umbilical cord blood, allowing for newborns to be exposed to toxins even before they are born.

Over the past few years, many health regulations have been put in place to regulate the ingredients used in processed food and in the products we use every day.  Shouldn’t fragrances be held to the same standards?
