How to Succeed With This Year's Resolution

With 2010 fast approaching many of us have probably begun to make preparations to start our resolutions. Again the majority of us probably have our hearts set on losing some of the weight we packed on after all those holiday meals. However, many fail in their weight loss goals for a variety of reasons. However, this year try not to make one large switch in lifestyle, but try to slowly make many little changes.

Most resolutions end up failing within a month of starting. However, try spending that first month just adjusting to your resolution. Each week try to change one or two things in your diet. During the first week you should start by cutting out things like junk food. Cutting out all those sugary foods will be the hardest, but most rewarding step. During the second week try increasing you intake of fruits and vegetables by 1 or 2 servings a day.

Continue this type of cutting back of your unhealthy foods, and increasing the intake of healthy food groups you may not be getting enough of. If you're able to find some time on a regular basis to exercise then you will definitely start seeing some results of your resolution. However, it won't be easy and the only way you’ll be able to succeed is if you can stay committed to your goals. If you find it hard to stay focused, try finding someone you know that will keep you on task and will help you throughout the next year.

H1N1 Vaccines Recalled by AstraZeneca's MedImmune Unit

AstraZeneca's MedImmune unit has issued a recall on 4.7 million doses of their nasal spray vaccine for H1N1. The recall was voluntary from the company, and they claim that the cause was due to potency concerns, not a failure or defect in the vaccine itself. The FDA says that those that have already been vaccinated with their medication do not need to be revaccinated.

MedImmune is not the first to recall H1N1 vaccines due to an error in the potency. Sanofi-Aventis recalled about 800,000 doses of their pediatric H1N1 injectable vaccines, due to the potency not being high enough.
However, MedImmune's recall is a bit different in nature than Sanofi-Aventis. MedImmune has recalled their vaccines not because of safety reasons, but as a precautionary measure. The company is worried about the potency in vaccines that are being stored. Apparently, some of the vaccines have diminished in terms of their strength and the company is worried about a significant part of their vaccine losing all of it potency. By recalling some of their product they can make sure a potent, working vaccine will be kept on the market, not a "watered-down" version.

There is no reason anyone should worry about this recall. If you haven't already been vaccinated, now is still a great time to go and get yourself some added protection.

4 Ways to Help Prevent Arthritis

Many of us view arthritis as something you only get when you're old, which is why many people are surprised to learn that they have arthritis at a much younger age. However, the good news is that there are ways to help lower your chances of staying arthritis free for more years to come.

1. Maintain a Healthy Weight - By maintaining a healthy weight, you can help prevent yourself from developing arthritis in your knees, hips, and feet. Being overweight can create a significant amount of strain on your joints and result in permanent damage.

2. Eat Healthy - By eating a healthy, balanced diet you not only maintain a healthy weight, but you give your body the needed nutrients to stay healthy. Vitamins and minerals are important for preventing arthritis.

3. Exercise Often - You need to participate in regular physical activity to stay healthy. By exercising you will help keep healthy muscles and gain many other benefits. However, try to stay away from high impact activities, such as football, basketball, and martial arts. Walking and swimming will be better forms of exercise for those worried about arthritis.

4. Prevent Injuries - Injury prevention is very important to prevent arthritis. Spend extra time making sure you are doing something properly, instead of getting it wrong and hurting yourself. Also, if you do suffer an injury, take time to let it heal fully.

Things to Remember - Always, always warm up before exercising. If you go to play a sport, do a quick jog and stretch to warm your muscles up. Wear safety gear, such as a brace or splint on a body part that has recently been injured or may be prone to injury. Make sure you get some rest after strenuous activity. Recovery days are as important as exercising regularly.

5 Ways to Avoid Holiday Season Allergy Symptoms

If you have an allergy to a commonly-used food in modern cuisine, or to dust or other allergens, you know that your allergy controls everything you do. Pollen allergies can become an issue during the holiday season because of that large pine tree in your living room. While the most common food allergies are shellfish, peanuts, tree nuts, fish and eggs, and unlikely to act as ingredients in holiday dishes, it never hurts to be safe when it comes to allergies.

Methods to Avoid Allergy Symptoms during the Holidays:

Fix the Tree - If you have mold or pollen allergies, selecting an artificial tree may be a wise decision this season. If an authentic tree is your only option, wipe it down with a wet cloth before bringing it into the house, and clean it frequently to avoid a buildup of allergens.

Clean Decorations - While your ornaments have been hiding away in storage all year, they have collected dust and pose as a threat to any mold allergy sufferers. Simply wiping down all decorations before placing them on your majestic pine tree will reduce dust allergens that may trigger an allergic reaction.

Clean Fireplace - Before its first use, cleaning your wood fireplace helps to prevent smoke inhalation, and will prevent any smoke inhalation based asthma and allergy attacks.

Poinsettias - This popular holiday plant is directly related to the Brazilian Rubber Tree, which latex is obtained from. If you have an allergy to latex, avoid direct contact with any part of the poinsettia.

Food - It's easy to censor what foods you eat within your own home, however during the holiday season its occasionally difficult to forecast what you’ll be eating at someone else's place. To avoid food allergy reactions, alert your host of your food allergies, and be sure to carry an epi-pen at all times.

While your allergies may take some toll on your daily routine, don't let them stop you from enjoying the holiday season!

Diabetes in Children: What You Need To Know

The cause of diabetes is unknown; however it has been linked to genetics, certain environmental triggers and lifestyle habits, such as eating right and exercising often. Today, about 7.8 percent of Americans living in the United States have diabetes. An alarming amount of those people are children. Similar to adults, children are equally susceptible to diabetes, although children are more likely to develop Type 1 diabetes as opposed to Type 2.

Why is My Child More Likely to Develop Type 1 Diabetes?
Type 1 Diabetes occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce insulin, a chemical that breaks down glucose in the blood. It is estimated that approximately ninety-three percent of all diabetic cases in youth are Type 1. While Type 2 diabetes has been linked to obesity, the reason for frequent cases of Type 1 diabetes in children is not entirely known. Some evidence suggests that Type 1 diabetes may be linked to allergies, and that avoiding cow's milk during an infant's first year of life may reduce the risk of diabetes. Type 1 diabetes has also been diagnosed in children after recovering from viral infections including influenza, polio, rubella, measles and mumps. There are several other factors that have led to Type 1 diabetes in children, such as genetics and diet.

How Can I Can I Tell If My Child Has Developed Diabetes?
Common symptoms of diabetes include thirst, weight loss, exhaustion, and frequent urination. Diabetes in children is also characterized by stomach pains, headaches and behavior problems. If you are concerned that your child may have some of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with your family doctor.

What Is The Treatment For Children With Diabetes?
Though there is no cure for diabetes, it can be easily managed with insulin treatment. For children, the most common methods of insulin treatment are injections and insulin pumps. Lifestyle change is an avid combatant against diabetes; adapting you and your child's lifestyle to more healthy alternatives such as regular physical exercise and healthy eating habits is crucial in managing your child’s diabetes.

There is no proof that diabetes is caused in children by any specific factor, so there is no need for anxiety concerning the condition that your child possibly could develop, and no need to ration your child's sugar intake as if you're in a famine. Though transitioning into a lifestyle that supports the prevention of diabetes in your child may seem daunting, just take small steps at a time.

Remember, even if part of your child's life is managing diabetes, it isn't their (or your) whole life, so enjoy it!

Do I Have Asthma?

Many people show some symptoms of asthma but are never diagnosed with asthma. Although it is a exceedingly common disease many people do not know they have it.
The 2 states of asthma are the steady-state of chronic asthma, and the acute state of an acute asthma exacerbation (worsening).

Chronic asthma symptoms -
  • Coughing at night
  • Shortness of breath - For those with chronic asthma, breathlessness occurs even when the person is resting. The person will sometimes not even be able to speak in sentences, but rather use singular words.
  • Chronic 'throat clearing' type of a cough
  • Complaints of a tight feeling in the chest - Often people with chronic asthma complain about feeling tight in their chest.
  • Lack of alertness - The person may show severe agitation and be drowsy during chronic asthma.
  • High pulse rate - A patient with chronic asthma may have a pulse greater than 120 beats per minute.
  • Wheezing - Loud wheezing is a common symptom of chronic asthma.
Acute asthma symptoms-

  • Coughing at night - In acute asthma coughing produces clear sputum
  • Shortness of breath - Shortness of breath only occurs during or right after for those who have acute asthma.
  • Asthma attack- A sudden asthma attack may be brought on in acute asthma.
  • Wheezing - Moderate wheezing during exercise or at other times may be a sign of acute asthma.

Symptoms of an asthma attack come in 3 stages:

  1. Coughing - this is a warning for the coming asthma attack. Your body is attempting to rid itself of the mucus built up in the bronchial tubes. Wheezing will begin. The persons palms will begin to sweat and his/her feet may become cold.
  2. Dyspnea - This means having difficulty breathing. The airways narrowed and the lungs have trouble vacating before having to gasp again.
  3. Severe bronchial obstruction - The air passageways have almost closed and are plugged with mucus. Possibly the patient may lose consciousness or turn blue from a lack of oxygen.

Asthma is a serious problem in thousands of people worldwide. There are various medications available for treatment, such as Advair Diskus, Spiriva, Combivent, Flovent, Salbutamol, and Singulair.

Coffee May Help Prevent Prostate Cancer

To the fellow male coffee drinkers out there, I have amazing news (sorry ladies, this one is just for the guys). A study on coffee and its effect on prostate cancer was presented at the Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research conference in Houston, Texas, that showed a great deal of promise. The finding of the study showed that men who regularly drink coffee have a significantly lower risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer. However, before anyone (mostly me) jumps to any sort of final conclusion, the study will require further investigation, and I'm sure there will be a multitude of studies just to follow up this one.

At this point in time I would just like to point out that coffee is really proving itself as a drink that will help your health not harm it. Coffee is mostly a good thing, (yes there are those few black marks on coffee's record) it has proven its ability to restore energy, focus the mind, decrease the severity of heart attacks or stroke, help protect against some cancers, type 2 diabetes, liver disease, and gallstones. Studies have shown that coffee helps prevent cavities, boosts a person's mood, and helps stop headaches.

Remember if anyone asks why you drink coffee, you can tell them that you think the taste is awesome (which it is). And you can also tell them because of all the health benefits coffee provides. They'll probably be confused due to the common misconception that coffee is bad for you, but you will know and that's all that matters. After that, just walk away and feel like a champ, I know I would. Then go to the nearest coffee shop and buy yourself a victory cup.

Foreign Accent Syndrome

Yes, that's right. There is actually an explanation for the accent Madonna puts on from time to time. Foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is a speech disorder that results in the changes of a person's speech pattern, intonation, and pronunciation. The usual cause of this is severe trauma to the brain, for example a stroke. However, the condition develops within one to two years of the injury.

Since the 1940's there have only been about 60 documented cases of FAS. Unfortunately not very many of those suffering from FAS are able to regain their original accent. A woman from England suffered a stroke at the age of 60. When she recovered she had a Jamaican accent.

There are very interesting cases even before people were properly documenting the condition. A young Norwegian woman suffered a head injury during an air-raid in 1941. When she recovered she had developed a strong German accent. As you can imagine Germany wasn't necessarily the most popular country in 1941, and the young woman was shunned by many of the members of the community. It's very sad, but also very interesting to learn of the kind of devastating effects a person's accent has on their life.

Unfortunately, scientists have not discovered exactly what causes the person's accent to change. When they do, hopefully they will discover a way to also reverse the damage and restore the original accent. One can only hope.

Top 5 Unbelievable Medical Stories

1. An older woman in her 60’s was taken to a hospital in Brazil where she said she was suffering from severe abdominal pains. After taking some X-rays doctors discovered that she had a 20 inch skeleton of a fetus that she had conceived nearly 10 years earlier.

2. A man in Michigan entered the ER with lacerations to his penis. After doctors gave an examination to the man’s wife they found the she had a surgical left inside of her after her recent hysterectomy.

3. A man from Georgia entered a local hospital after escaping from his wife. Apparently, while they were asleep his wife, who was quite a deal heavier than the man, rolled on top of him, crushing him in the middle of the night. After the incident, the wife felt so ashamed of what she had done and with her weight that she actually refused to let her husband leave to seek medical attention. Then one night, while the wife slept, the husband left the house and rushed to the nearest hospital.

4. A man who had clearly had too much to drink stumbled into an ER in Pennsylvania. He had been complaining about his inability to get his contacts out. He said that he could pull the contacts out only halfway, but they would always go back onto his eye. A nurse attempted to use a suction pump, but found that the contacts would not come out. Eventually the man would be examined by a doctor, who noticed he didn’t have any contacts in. The man had been trying to tear out the membrane of his cornea.

5. A man was scheduled for surgery in Seattle to remove a tumor in his abdomen. After the surgery, doctors let him know that the tumor had been successfully removed; however they later discovered that they left a 13-inch retractor inside the man’s abdomen. The doctor’s were able to remove the retractor without causing damage to the man.

Five Ways to Prevent Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bone thinning over the course of several years. People who are diagnosed with osteoporosis are more prone to bone fractures. Although women are often most likely to develop osteoporosis, Caucasians, those with a family history of osteoporosis are also at risk. The good news is that even if you haven't exactly been leading a healthy lifestyle, preventing osteoporosis is still easily possible!

Ways to Prevent Osteoporosis:

1. Increase Calcium Intake - Adults should consume at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium each day. Calcium is easy to add into your diet, as it can be obtained by eating common foods such as yogurt and cheese and drinking milk. If you are lactose intolerant, foods such as chickpeas, canned salmon (with bones), and tofu are rich in calcium. If you find that you can’t incorporate enough calcium into your diet, calcium supplements are an additional option.

2. Increase Vitamin D Intake - Vitamin D allows your body to absorb calcium better. Increasing you intake of vitamin D is easy; by eating foods like salt water fish, egg yolks and liver or even a walk in the sunshine, you can increase your consumption of vitamin D.

3. Exercise! - Regular exercise promotes strong bone development. Cardio exercises involving impact, such as dancing, running or jogging, are beneficial in preventing osteoporosis. Weight training is the key to developing bones in the upper body and will also help to develop balance, which reduces the chance of falling and breaking bones.

4. Limit Alcohol Intake - Stick to one or two drinks per day, as excessive amounts of alcohol heightens your risk of osteoporosis.

5. Don't Smoke - On top of all its other negative side effects, smoking increases the bone thinning once it begins. Studies have shown a direct link between cigarette smoking and osteoporosis, demonstrating that smokers are not only more prone to fractures and low bone mass, but that they also take more time to heal from fractures. If you smoke, the best way to prevent osteoporosis is obvious, just quit.

Preventing osteoporosis begins early in life, with good nutrition and regular exercise; however, even if you aren't living healthily, with a few lifestyle changes, it's easy to prevent osteoporosis and other health ailments.
