15% of Preschoolers Suffer From High Levels of Depression or Anxiety

Think that the children have it easy? Well it looks like you thought wrong. According to a recent study, 15% of preschoolers suffer from high levels of depression and anxiety. While some minor forms of depression and anxiety are normal in young children, elevated levels are very concerning. Difficult temperaments and maternal depression were found to be the most important risk factors.

Now I want to know what this means. Is it simply a factor of childhood, or is it a reflection of the world in which we know live in? Or was there just an abnormally high amount of depressed people in the testing region? The reason for the high rate of depression amongst preschoolers is unknown to me, but the one thing that is most alarming is the fact that 15% of preschoolers are suffering from abnormally high levels of depression and anxiety.

How is it that 15% of children who are not even in school yet are feel depressed and anxious. What are they depressed about? The only thing I can think of is, blame the parents. Sure maybe not all the cases are the parents fault, but at the same time, I don’t see how it is possible, in most of the cases, to not be the parents fault. The children haven’t really been exposed to the world and have only had the chance to take in the emotions, and general energy of the parents. Some sort of change needs to happen first with the parents because we can’t have a society where that many people are depressed. They deserve better.

Eat With a Heavier Friend and Lose Weight

Well a recent study has shown; if you want to eat less bring a bigger friend along with you. Researchers tested students to see how much they would eat. When the researcher was a size zero, but ate a lot, the test subject ate more.

However, when the researcher put on a fat suit and became a size sixteen, the test subjects tended to eat significantly less. My theory behind this is if the test subject wanted to stay or become skinny and saw a heavier person eating a lot they would eat less because they see what could happen if they binge on food. Yet, when they see a skinnier person eating a lot their mind tells them that it’s okay to eat a lot sometimes, if this person is skinny and eats a lot, then I can do the same.

When the researcher appeared thin she had a significant boost in control over the test subjects eating habits. However, the test subjects almost always ate less than the researcher regardless of the weight.

So if you really want to lose some weight and eat less food, maybe you should bring one of your heavier friends with you. Now you don’t need those dieting strategies, most of them are unhealthy anyway. You no longer need a personal cook, or to really control yourself as much. You just need a friend that’s a little bit bigger than you.

The Power of Marriage Helps Battle Cancer

Will finding that special someone help you survive cancer? Well a new study has shown that those that are married have a higher survival rate when compared to people that are single, divorced, or going through a separation.

Those that have found their life partner have a 63 per cent 5 year survival rate, and a 53 per cent 10 year survival rate. Followed by those that have never been married, then people who are divorced or widowed, and last are people who are going through a separation.

Obviously the stress of going through a split up takes a significant toll on the body. That damage lasts for the rest of your life and will always linger. However, those that are married or have never been married haven’t witnessed that sort of damage at least not for themselves. I would think this would help the person that is diagnosed use more of their energy on fighting cancer.

I think the only reason why married people have a better survival rate than people that have never been married is that married people have much more emotional support from their significant other. Their husband/wife is there helping them along the way, cutting some of the stress away and giving that person the chance to use more energy to fight the disease. Also, if I were married and diagnosed with cancer, I would feel the need to fight and beat cancer so I don’t leave my wife alone in the world. I would feel obligated to stay with my wife and be there to support her.

Regardless, marriage truly is an incredible union. Makes you wonder all the other illnesses that married people have a better chance of living through.

Tanning and Your Kids

A survey of 1,300 high school kids from six different schools showed that 53% of high school students like to tan. Not a huge shock that just over half of the kids like to tan, especially with what today’s celebrities look like (I’m not a huge fan of the orange skin though). Although the one major thing that I find ridiculous is how almost every kid that said they tanned didn’t think they would be affected.

It does have to make you wonder what are these kids learning? If your child is stupid enough to think that they won’t ever be affected by their tanning, then I am surprised natural selection hasn’t found them already. If your kid does tan and doesn’t get any sort of cancer, great, but don’t expect to never be affected by what you do. Tanning is a big invite for UV rays to come and do their worst. It will most likely lead to skin cancer.

Maybe its not the schools fault maybe the parents are to blame. Parents talk to their kids about tanning. At least make them wear sunscreen and tell them the sort of damage they are doing. If your child still goes out to tan try to make sure they don’t tan for too long. Also try to get them to tan occasionally if they really want to. Cancer isn’t fun, but you should know what could and most likely will happen to you if you stay out in the sun for too long, too often.

Breastfeeding Good For Mothers Too!

Most mothers know that breastfeeding their child has numerous health benefits for their child because they get all the nutrients they need. However, in today’s busy world where most women either bring in equal income or more income then their male counterparts, many women have chosen not to breastfeed, but instead went for the formula. Recent studies may make those considering feeding their child formula to reconsider.

A recent study has shown that breastfeeding may be good for the mother as well. If you have a family history of breast cancer then breastfeeding may be an incredibly important thing for you to do. Research shows that if you have a history of breast cancer then breastfeeding can actually cut the risk of breast cancer before menopause in half!

Additionally, if you chose not to breastfeed, BUT you did take the medication to help suppress the production of breast milk you also lowered your risk of breast cancer by about 42%. Although taking medication isn’t as good as breastfeeding it is definitely a better option then choosing not to breastfeed and not take the medication.

Hopefully this helps you decide whether breastfeeding is important to you or not. If you do possess a history of breast cancer then maybe this will give you that final push to decide to breastfeed your child.

Music Has The Power To Move You… And A Lot More!

Most people enjoy listening to music. There are so many different types of music out there to choose from, such as rock music, metal, rap, R&B, pop…etc. And when people say that music has the power to move us they’re right.

Music actually affects us on a very deep level. Certain music can pump you up, which is especially useful right before that big game. Other types of music can calm you down and help you de-stress after a long day at work. Music truly is therapy for the soul and apparently treatment for a lot of other things.

Music is actually used as a treatment for seizures, to lower blood pressure, treat ADD in children, mental illness, depression, aid in healing, stress, and insomnia. Music has become much like a drug in medication because of the great impact it has on the human mind. Additionally, music has not only helped humans, but plants as well. A study was done where classical music was played around a plant and it actually helped the plant develop and grow significantly faster.

Music is an incredible tool and is a great outlet for built up emotions. Writing music can be a great stress reliever in itself. Writing lyrics or even guitar riffs may help you express some of that built up stored emotion in a positive way. Also, people will probably think that you’re pretty talented if you keep writing music, it’s not a very easily mastered skill.

Extreme Background Check’s For Doctor’s Needed?

Maybe we should be doing some extreme background check’s on our Doctors soon. By extreme I mean look at a criminal record, talk to the family, and even speak with some of the neighbors the child grew up around. This probably shouldn’t be necessary, especially for a person that has gone through 10+ years of post-secondary schooling, and spent thousands of dollars on their education, only to help people. However, a doctor in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, might have made this necessary.

Edmonton doctor Javier Castillo Cortes, is being charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of sexual interference, two counts of exposure to a person under the age of 16, and one each of the following: invitation to sexual touching, indecent act, forcible confinement, and assault. All the alleged events were said to have taken place between July 2008-July 2009.

This has deeply troubled me to know that even with doctors we might not be safe, our children might not be safe. How can we have faith in those that are going to take care of us if things like this happen? Something has to be done about this, and Cortes needs to be made an example of by the Canadian Justice System. Targeting children is just plain sick and this man, if he can even be called this, needs to be shown that trying to prey on children is unacceptable and one of the most disgusting things someone can do.

This event has however shaken my faith in those I trust. This coupled with the ongoing debates over healthcare reform have continued to just rock the boat. Whether I support a reform or not doesn’t really matter in this article, but if this reform does happen, we might need some protection added to the hospitals.

Sperm Travels Faster in Attractive Women

Despite popular belief, males actually can adjust the speed their sperm travels after ejaculation in a woman. A new study has found that men can control the speed and efficiency of their sperm by distributing more or less seminal fluid to their semen.

How do men control their sperm? The trigger is entirely dependent on the attractiveness of the female.

The study found that males, no matter how promiscuous, can mate with many different females; however their chances of fertilization are greater if the female companion is considered attractive.

The researches collected natural ejaculates from dominant and subordinate males at the University of Stockholm who had just mated with either an attractive or unattractive female.

According to the study’s co-author Charlie Cornwallis from the University of Oxford, “Female attractiveness is determined by the expression of a sexual ornament – the comb – which is phenotypically and genetically correlated to the number and mass of eggs females lay”.

Bioengineered Teeth – A successful experiment

Modern science and technology are capable of creating the unimaginable – we are constantly amazed and awed by each small discovery. However, are we ready to experience a whole new form of amazement?

Scientists in Japan have successfully been able to bioengineer teeth in adult mice. That’s right – they have found a way to give a mouse a whole new set of chops. So far, their method only works on adult mice, however someday soon there may be a similar method that works on adults.

The team, led by cell biologist Takashi Tsuji from Tokyo University of Science, focused on embryonic tissues that develop into teeth. He extracted these tissues from mouse embryos, separated the epithelial cells and mesenchymal cells, recombined them into a new bioengineered tooth germ, grew them for 5-7 days, planted them into the jaws of adult mice, and voila! New healthy teeth reached their full potential after just 49 days. The new teeth proved to be just like the real thing – they had roots, inner pulp, outer enamel, and proved to be just as hard and durable as normal teeth. Previous studies have been tried, but none were as successful as this recent experiment.

This method is not perfected. It will still be many years before it can be successful enough to work on humans. Although this is a huge step in science, for the mean time, it’s probably best to take care of the teeth you have, or stick to implants and dentures – it may be a long and painful 49 days waiting for your new tooth to grow back!
