What is Feverfew?

Feverfew is an herbal product predominently used for treating headaches. It works to inhibit the release of two inflammatory substances, serotonin and prostaglandins, both believed to contribute to the onset of migraines. By inhibiting these amines as well as the production of the chemical histamine, feverfew controls inflammation that constricts the blood vessels in the head, and prevents blood vessel spasms which may contribute to headaches.

It may also relieve dizziness, tinnitus, arthritis, fever, and painful or sluggish menstruation.

Before using this herbal product, inform your doctor if you are allergic to feverfew; if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breast feeding; if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement; if you have a blood clotting disorder, kidney or liver problems, or vitamin K deficiency.

Important information about Feverfew

Side effects from feverfew include:

  • abdominal pain;
  • indigestion;
  • flatulence;
  • diarrhea;
  • nausea;
  • vomiting;
  • nervousness.

People with allergies to chamomile, ragweed, or yarrow will likely be allergic to feverfew and, therefore, should not take it.

Feverfew may increase the tendency to bleed, especially in individuals with bleeding disorders or taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or warfarin. Do not use feverfew if you have bleeding disorders or are taking blood-thinning medications unless you are under the supervision of a doctor.

Pregnant and nursing women as well as children under 2 years of age should not take feverfew.

This information is advisory only. It does not contain all information about this medication. If you have any questions about feverfew, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or health care provider.

How Benadryl eases symptoms of the common cold.

The combination of acetaminophen and pseudoephedrine in antihistamines like Benadryl are used to treat stuffy nose, sinus congestion, and pain or fever casued by the common cold. Benadryl works by preventing the effects of histamine, which is produced by the body.

Decongestants (phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine) produce a narrowing of blood vessels and leads to clearing of nasal congestion. Patients who have high blood pressure should avoid its use as it may increase your blood pressure.

Analgesics (acetaminophen and salicylates for e.g., aspirin, sodium salicylate) are used to help relieve fever, headache, aches, and pain.

Special Warnings

Antihistamines may cause dizziness and drowsiness. Use caution while driving, using machinery, or doing any activity that requires alertness.

Always ask a doctor before giving cough or cold medicine to a child. Death can occur from the misuse of cough or cold medicine in very young children. Do not take more of this medication than is recommended.

If you drink more than three alcoholic beverages per day, do not take this medication without first speaking with your doctor.

Inform your doctor if you have:

  • liver disease;
  • alcoholism or cirrhosis of the liver;
  • heart disease or high blood pressure;
  • glaucoma;
  • an enlarged prostate;
  • diabetes;
  • a thyroid disorder.

This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. Acetaminophen and pseudoephedrine may pass into breast milk and could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breastfeeding.
