Yasmin birth control pill

Yasmin is a combination birth control pill, the type of pill most often prescribed by healthcare professionals. Combination pills contain two types of hormones: an estrogen and a progestin. They work in two ways:

  • The body is "tricked" into thinking it is pregnant. This prevents the release of an egg, or ovulation. Without an egg to be fertilized, a woman cannot become pregnant.
  • The cervical mucus is thickened, making it difficult for sperm to travel toward the egg and fertilize it in case an egg is released.

Yasmin is what's known as a monophasic birth control pill. This means that each of the first 21 pills contains the same amount of estrogen and progestin. The last seven pills in a 28-pill, monophasic pack contain no active ingredients and are there to keep you in the habit of taking the Pill every day - commonly referred to as "reminder pills".

When taken correctly and consistently Yasmin is more than 99% effective. This is the highest level of pregnancy protection a birth control method can offer. Only abstinence is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy.

Are there benefits to taking Yasmin?

Like other birth control pills Yasmin can help give you a shorter, lighter period, a more regular cycle and less cramping. Lighter periods can mean less blood loss leading to a decrease in the risk of iron deficiency anemia.

Yasmin may also reduce the risk of:

  • Ovarian cysts
  • Noncancerous breast cysts or lumps
  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Endometrial cancer
  • Ovarian cancer

What side effects does Yasmin have?

Not all women experience them, and most of these symptoms disappear within the first few months of use, as the body adjusts to Yasmin. Some of these include:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Bloating
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Breast tenderness

Symptoms that persist should be brought to the attention of your healthcare professional as soon as possible.

Cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects, especially if you're over 35. Women who use birth control pills should not smoke. Some women should not use the Pill, including women who have or have had blood clots, certain cancers, a history of heart attack or stroke, as well as those who are or may be pregnant. Yasmin does not protect against HIV/AIDS or sexually transmitted diseases.
