LIPITOR

Lipitor lowers LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol by blocking an enzyme found in the liver that your body uses to produce cholesterol. When less cholesterol is produced it enables the liver to use more of it from your bloodstream - this results in lower levels of cholesterol in your blood.

Lipitor lowers "bad" cholesterol levels in the blood by 39% - 60% (average effect depending on your dose). It also increases the level of HDL (high-density lipoprotein) or "good" cholesterol in the blood which also helps clean up the "bad" cholesterol.

What are some benefits of Lipitor?

Lipitor is proven to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. It is generally well-tolerated and has few clinically significant drug interactions. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food.

What about diet and exercise - can they alone help with cholesterol?

While diet and exercise are a good start, combining these two steps with a cholesterol-lowering medication like Lipitor will get you the result you're looking for. Try some of these helpful hints:

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.
  • Park your car farther away from the door of your destination. Parking farther away and walking will add necessary exercise to your day.
  • Get 30 minutes of activity 3-4 times a week for the best results.
  • Add more fruits, grains, veggies and lean proteins to your diet every day.

Does Lipitor have any side effects?

Lipitor is generally well tolerated with some side effects including gas, stomach pain, indigestion and constipation. These side effects are usually mild and tend to go away. If you experience muscle pain or weakness tell your doctor right away.

Lipitor should not be taken if you:

  • Have active liver disease or possible liver problems
  • Are pregnant, could possibly become pregnant or are breast-feeding
  • Are allergic to any of the ingredients in Lipitor
  • Are taking a medication that might interact with Lipitor

Advair Diskus

Advair treats the two main components of asthma - airway constriction and inflammation. These two components cause the airways to narrow and reduce airflow into the lungs which may result in wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath. Advair is a breath-activated device, eliminating all of the squeezing and shaking of inhalers and the hassle of spacers.

How does Advair treat asthma?

It successfully treats the two main components of asthma (airway constriction and inflammation)by using:

  • An effective inhaled corticosteroid: fluticasone propionate. This medicine reduces the inflammation in the airways.
  • An effective inhaled long-acting bronchodilator: salmeterol. This medicine works by helping to relax the muscles surrounding the airways.

How soon after taking Advair should I notice an improvement?

You may notice improvement within 30 minutes. Maximum results may take a week or longer. It's important to keep taking your Advair twice a day, every day, as directed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor if symptoms do not improve.

Is there anything I should know before considering Advair?

Advair contains salmeterol. Patients with asthma who take medicines like salmeterol may have an increased chance of asthma-related death. Therefore Advair is not for people whose asthma is under control on another controller medicine.

If your asthma does not improve while taking Advair speak with your doctor. Tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure. Some people may experience increased blood pressure, heart rate, or changes in heart rhythm. Advair is for patients 4 years and older.

FOSAMAX

Fosamax is prescribed for osteoporosis (thinning bones). Eventhough a healthy diet, regular exercise and vitamins are important in maintaining bone health it may not be enough. Fosamax has been proven to help reverse bone loss in most patients - not just slow it down.

What is osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is often called a "silent disease" because there are no symptoms, so you can't feel your bones become weak. Sometimes women will not know they have osteoporosis until a bone breaks. Bones begin to weaken as you get older, especially after menopause.

It is a disease that causes bones to become more porous, gradually making them weaker and more brittle. Our bodies go through a continuous bone-building cycle in which old bone is broken down and new bone is formed. Osteoporosis is caused by an imbalance in this cycle in which too much bone is broken down and not completely built.

How does Fosamax help osteoporosis?

With effects seen as soon as 3 months after therapy, Fosamax helps reverse bone loss by:

  • Reducing the activity of the cells that cause bone loss
  • Decreasing the faster rate of bone loss that occurs after menopause or with use of corticosteroid medications
  • Increasing the amount of bone in most patients

How is Fosamax taken?

When taking the 5mg or 10mg tablet, swallow 1 Fosamax tablet with 6 to 8 oz of plain water first thing in the morning before you have anything to eat or drink. Start your day's activities, but don't lie down, eat, drink, or take other medications for at least 30 minutes. If you want to lie down after 30 minutes, you must eat breakfast first.

Does Fosamax have any side effects?

You shouldn't use Fosamax if you:

  • Have certain disorders of the esophagus
  • Are not able to stand or sit upright for 30 minutes
  • Have severe kidney disease
  • Have low blood calcium
  • Are allergic to Fosamax

Stop taking Fosamax and call your doctor right away if you develop new or worsening heartburn, difficult or painful swallowing, or chest pain because these may be signs of serious upper digestive problems, which can include irritation, inflammation, or ulceration of the esophagus. If you develop severe bone, joint, and/or muscle pain at any time, contact your doctor . Digestive side effects in studies were generally mild and included stomach pain, indigestion/heartburn, or nausea.

AveoTSD anti-snoring device.

What is aveoTSD and how does it work?

The aveoTSD is an anti snoring mouth guard made from a soft medical silicone. It works by holding the tongue forward by gentle suction, preventing it from falling against the back of the throat, keeping the airway open during sleep.

What causes snoring?

Snoring is caused by a narrowed airway during sleep. This can be due to large tonsils, a long soft palate or uvula, or, in people who are overweight, excessive flabby tissue; with all those areas relaxing during sleep . Nasal congestion from allergies or deformities of the cartilage between the two sides of the nose and other internal nasal structures also contribute to a narrowing of the airway.

The most common cause of a narrowed airway is, however, a tongue muscle that relaxes too much during sleep and gets sucked back into the airway with each breath taken.

Snoring occurs when air travels faster through a narrow tube than through a broad one. This rapidly moving air causes the relaxed tissues of the throat to vibrate. The sound (vibration) caused by the rapidly moving air is what we know as snoring. However, by keeping the airway open with aveoTSD, air travels slower, reducing the vibrations in the throat, therefore reducing or stopping snoring.

Can snoring be harmful?

Snoring can progress into a medical condition known as obstructive sleep apnea - where the tongue is completely sucked against the back of the throat and breathing stops. This airway obstruction causes the heart rate to fall below normal with decreases in blood oxygen levels. The obstruction will not clear until the brain oxygen level falls low enough to partially awaken the sleeper with a release of adrenaline to prevent suffocation. Due to the adrenaline release the heart rate is now increased above normal. These events may happen hundreds of times a night, not allowing deep restorative sleep, and causing reduced blood oxygen levels.

What are some symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea?

  • You awaken frequently with a sensation of gasping , choking or palpitations.
  • Your partner has observed that you stop breathing when you are asleep.
  • You wake in the morning with a headache.
  • You experience reflux and night-time heartburn episodes.
  • You are excessively tired during the day.
  • You fall asleep at inappropriate times.
  • Poor physical and intellectual performance.

What kinds of treatment are there for snoring and sleep apnea?

Mild or occasional snoring and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea maybe alleviated by lifestyle changes including:

  • Losing weight
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Within 3 hours before bedtime avoiding alcohol, heavy meals and medications that make you drowsy

Other treatment options include:

  • Surgery to the nose, throat, tongue or jaw
  • Nasal CPAP ( Continuous Positive Airway Pressure ) a therapy in which an air compression device is used to force the airway open and aid breathing during sleep (used only under medical supervision ).
  • Oral dental devices ( mandibular advancement splints ) that are attached to the teeth and are worn at night to keep the lower jaw forward.
  • AveoTSD which keeps the tongue from falling against the back of the throat, keeping the airway open during sleep.
