Lexapro
As a member of the group of prescription drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), Lexapro has been shown to effectively relieve symptoms for both depression and generalized anxiety disorder.
How does Lexapro work?
Lexapro helps to restore the brain's chemical balance by increasing the supply of a chemical messenger in the brain called serotonin. Lexapro appears to relieve the symptoms of depression and anxiety by increasing serotonin with minimal effect on many of the other chemicals in the brain.
How do selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors work?
Mounting research shows that people with depression and anxiety have an imbalance of the brain's neurotransmitters. These are chemicals in the brain that allow nerve cells to communicate. One of these neurotransmitters is serotonin. An imbalance in serotonin may be an important factor in the development of depression and anxiety. Serotonin is released from one nerve cell and passed to the next. In the process, some of the serotonin released is reabsorbed by the first nerve cell. SSRIs, like Lexapro, block the reabsorption of serotonin into the first nerve cell. It is this blocking action that causes an increased amount of serotonin to become available at the next nerve cell. This is how SSRIs affect the balance of serotonin in the brain.
What causes depression and anxiety?
The causes of depression and anxiety are not always clear. Depression may be caused by an event or for no apparent reason at all. Genes may also play a role in not providing your brain with enough serotonin. As for anxiety, research suggests that environmental and genetic factors (if there is a family history of GAD) may make a person more likely to develop the disorder. Generalized anxiety disorder may also be caused by an imbalance of certain chemicals in the brain - in particular, dopamine and serotonin, which are believed to regulate mood and behavior.
Symptoms of depression (may differ person to person):
- persistent depressed or irritable mood
- lack of pleasure in activities
- a sudden change in weight
- change in sleep habits
- agitation or restlessness
- constant fatigue
- feelings of worthlessness
- frequent thoughts of death or suicide
Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (again, may differ person to person):
- persistent worry and tension that is much worse than the anxiety most people experience from time to time
- an exaggerated or unfounded state of worry and anxiety, often about such matters as health, money, family, or work
- unable to relax and may startle easily
- fatigue
- headaches
- muscle tension
How will I know Lexapro is working?
In clinical studies, many patients treated with Lexapro began to feel better within 1 or 2 weeks, although the full effect may take 4 to 6 weeks. However, even if you start feeling better do not stop taking Lexapro unless otherwise stated by your doctor; your symptoms could return or worsen.
What are the side effects?
Most of the side effects experienced by people taking Lexapro are mild to moderate and disappear with continued treatment. The medication is generally well tolerated but side effects have been known to include:
- nausea
- insomnia
- problems with ejaculation
- somnolence
- increased sweating
- fatigue
- decreased libido
- anorgasmia
If side effects persist or worsen while taking Lexapro, contatct your doctor immediately.
