Avandia (Rosiglitazone), along with diet and exercise, helps improve blood sugar control.Rosiglitazone Maleate  is used by people with Type 2 diabetes to reduce and maintain blood sugar.  Rosiglitazone Maleate does not increase the actual amount of insulin in circulation. Rosiglitazone Maleate reduces the amount of sugar produced by the body, and optimizes how existing insulin handles the sugar in the blood stream. In Canada, Avandia is contraindicated in patients with significant heart disease.  Avandia should be used with caution in any patient with a history of heart disease.  All patients should be monitored for signs and symptoms of fluid retention, edema and rapid weight gain.  The dose of Avandia used in combination with a sulfonylurea should not excee 4mg daily.
